Yes. I meant F&R. Don't get me wrong, if you can afford them then they are better, but during the 3 year beating I gave mine, I couldn't break anything.

I think the Spider gears are the weakest point on the D2 drivetrain and these are replaced when you install lockers.

Be good to see yours on 35's. I will be interested to see how you go about it. I refuse to go Pedes this time, I'm just sick of the problems they give me. However, finding an alternative is not that easy as I don't want to go over 11.5" width (285). If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them.

That's all well and good (and likely relating to a standard unit), but 40 years down the track with the tyres (treads and sizes) and locking diffs being available nowadays, even a careful driver would be at the mercy of something which isn't made from factory to run such gear.

I do get what you mean though.

    Thanks Adam.

Will post up some pic's when she's all done. I just bought the Les Richmond 2 inch suspension lowering kit, will likely go 3 inch coils all round too, then chop the guards.

As you say, there aren't many alternatives to Pede's, which is why I ended up with them

    Hello,

Your D2 sounds like a awesome built.

Just picked my D2 up from Vic, have the LR suspension kit but only 33"

Here a quick look how the LR lift will look

Have Ashcroft rear lockers and maxi drive axels but debating what i do in the front. Definitely want front locker (any suggestions) but after reading in this thread not sure whether I really need the CV's and axels?

Has someone heard of the HiThough Axels from Coffs Harbour 4x4?
HI Tough® Axles Defender Range Rover Discovery | eBay.

Not sure whether they have them for the D2 though.

    Cheers

    Steve

PS love to see some pics from your build.

Thanks to the drop in the Australia dollar, the cost increased a bit for the order - $4,643.24 total delivered including all customs, GST and duties charges of $629.12 and then TNT Customs were kind enough to charge a further 1.9% (amounting to $11.95) on this for using a credit card to pay (the alternative was direct deposit and a few more days delay in receiving the goods).

Vehicle is booked into Justin Cooper for Monday next week for fitment - although I keep thinking I wouldn't mind having a go fitting them myself...

    D2 axles and diffs

Interesting that you guys have such confidence in the standard axles and diffs. Makes me feel a bit better!

Reading one of the popular local 4WD magazines they basically said the D2 axles were like 'toothpicks' if you fitted larger tyres, ditto with diffs.

Love to know which magazine that was, cause they are speaking rubbish. The axles and CV's are great and much better than any other stock brands.

The diffs are a bit different. The C&P are pretty good but can have flexing problems although I have never encounter this yet. The diff centre on the D2 is the week point. Running larger more aggressive tyres will destroy the spider gears very very quickly. However installing a proper locker will fix this.

    diffs

Hey Walker - Toyota Action! They had a review of buying a used D2 TD5. The guy that wrote it clearly did not like Landrovers!

Because you would expect a non-biased review of a Land Rover in a Toyota magazine...
