Question What do you think i'd be up for $$'s?

    Hi All,
I hope you are doing brilliantly well.

I'd appreciate some help please if anyone has had similar/like work done and how much you paid going through a LR mechanic as I am trying to work out my pennies :-D...

    1. Rear Bushes
    2. Rear Drive Shaft (haven't called Hardy Spicers yet for $'s)
    3. Rear Hub oil leak?
    4. Oil leak on handbrake cable assume from transfer case?? May need a new seal?

Also, can anyone shed any light on how long I may be off the road for... kindy and school run impacted that's all ... (a holiday for me from it - wahoo lol!)

These are the main issues for me that I think need my immediate attention.

    Many thanks,

    Lp

On the rear shaft, is it uni issue or the donut?

Leak could be rear output seal, or other areas. Hard to tell without pics. Rear bushes are about $100- labour plus parts (here at least).

Ok, thanks for the replies Clubagreenie and Blknight.aus, much appreciated. I was thinking around the 1K mark so not to much of a surprise LOL!

As for the rear driveshaft, I have no idea whether it is one or both of those clubagreenie, hubby has said he will take it off and take it to them. The front was done last year by Hardy Spicers.

I think it is the seal from memory that needs doing on the rear hub too.

    Also,
If I get a full service... what exactly does that cover and does it differ from mechanics to mechanics? I had one done a while back, can't find my paperwork. Appreciate the input.

    Thanks again,
    Lp

I'll be down that way in a few weeks on a road trip. Was planning on stopping in Bendigo to see so relo's (probably for the last time and see the Nans final stopping place (since I wasn't told about her passing until after the events were over)) and thought I'd try to catch up anyway. I can help with the rear hub, it's only 4 bolts (plus ancillaries requiring removal) and an o-ring, not an actual seal.

What are the symptoms of the rear shaft? Chock the wheels and have the shaft unloaded (Neutral and no hand brake) so that it can be moved on the systems backlash. Grab either side of the slip joint, flex up and down/side to side, excessive movement here will cause vibrations. Look at the doughnut (diff end rubber) if it's cracked or looks like it's collapsed (bolts are closer together in direction of rotation than in other direction),

    This
is what a good one should look like. Please also mark the orientation of the shaft before removing so it goes back in the same way and can have the same symptoms and before it was fixed. The uni end, there shouldn't be any side to side or rotational movement at the cross piece (in the centre of the uni)

The transfer is not a big a job as removing and replacing it. Ashcrofts have a really good rebuild kit. All bearings and seals (NSK/Timken bearings) for only (90pounds). Plus upgrade the coupling shaft to a later cross drilled type (your's should have the cross drilled input gear but not the drilled coupling shaft) which is (44pounds). Maybe if you're doing a long highway runs a larger capacity sump (65pounds). Apart from that you're not doing heavy off road so I wouldn't worry about upgrading other stuff (unless it was found to be damaged). There is a situation where the intermediate shaft can start to move and flog out or stretch the hole for the shaft in the housing and nothing will seal it. It needs to be reamed out and a steel sleeve put in (while mine no bad, again, I've just ordered a new casing from Ashcrofts as it's cheaper than having the work done here and it's out anyway).

The bushes, I'm assuming radius arms. Cutting them out isn't a hard job but presing them in is without the right tools. Alternately use some SuperPro bushes and never worry about the press again. Are the Watts link bushes ok? Again not hard to do and while stuffs apart.

Now, I've got a large order on Ashcrofts at the moment and I can add anything you need to it before it leaves (about a week as they have to build me an auto).

    A full service (100,000km) should be (for me anyway);

All oils (Eng, Auto, Tfr, Diffs, Steering, ACE, Brake Fluid) and filters (maybe a flush for auto and cooling systems).
    Plugs, leads (hate D2 leads).
Check all mounts (Eng, G/box, Tfr, exhaust).
Check all steering components, grease everywhere that has allowances for it.
    Check brakes (incl handbrake).
Wheel bearings, check for noise and movement. Remove ABS sensors and clean (they are magnetic and attract any metal filings etc and can play up readings and it's only one bolt, I guess there's an option to pump some grease in there but haven't seen one full apart but it should push into the bearing area).
Reset adaptive functions on auto ECU.
    Test all electrical functions.

Again, all stuff that's not too hard and can be covered in a weekend so not to interrupt the school run. You can drive around on just the front shaft with the CDL locked (if you don't have one fitted prime opportunity to do so while servicing the tfr) while the rear shaft is being done. Bushes and hub seal allow another weekend for.

Again, more than happy to lend a hand and do the tfr when I'm down that way.

    Regards

    justin

She only has it because I inspected it and told her it was ok to buy so I feel a certain level of responsibility towards it.

a full service varies from greaser to greaser....

you wouldnt want to be paying the hourly rate when I do a full birthday service on a vehicle. (and most people dont, they turn up to help and learn) hell some people get scared with the parts prices.

of course compared to a $200 full service from mobile lube I'm essentially rebuilding the car.

    Thumbs up

Wowser Justin!! Thank you... however I think I have 'missed the boat' with your offer... never mind though. Safe travels to you and I am sincerely sorry to hear about your nan.

We now have x5 little ones... a surprise addition that arrived in March LOL!... all our lot are under the age of 6years with our last being 5 months at present... so I really don't get online too much.... it's a nut house here some times, well most days - HA!

Personally from the bottom of my heart, thank you so very much for such an informative reply, that's just awesome... I'll probably go through your post in more detail on Saturday - it's my 'day off' as such... hubby looks after the lil nuts - HA!... but hey, I just do more reno work on the house (yep handy with my tools and love getting into it all), sew for the kids or cook and bake for them (just like a chik too hahah) and just as probably most mammas do!!

If you are still in the area though, by all means PM me...:-D...

Blknight.aus - THANK YOU too for your reply. Alll information received from you is fantastically appreciated. A huge help so thank you!...

BTW - Lp is coming up-to 280K ie.... thousand :-D

    Thank again, :-D

Haven't left yet so there's still potential. Maybe even babysit and give you an night off. But that'll cost ya'.

But it has missed the plane, Ashcroft order landed last night. Now have to get over landing costs. GST is nothing compared to clearance charges.
