    Gearbox noise

Hi all hate to ask so many questions but dont ask dont learn tho lol

My 99 d2 has started making a noise. Sounds like its clutch related to me but im unsure after reading other posts about dual clutchs or something?? :/

The noise it self is like something hitting a fan. Only happens when u back off and allow it to engine brake. I took an extended trip home to see if i could pin point the noise. If i depress and release the clutch slowely while it is making the noise it comes and goes(no noise clutch in noise with clutch out). Im thing release bearing? The noise is there for 1,2,3,4 and minimally in 5th higher revs do not make it worse. Noise is there in low range also.

Small leak on drain plug of box cant see filler plug though so cant check fluid level if thats how you check it. Will low oil cause a noise? Or water in the box?

Thanks for any help really appreciate it

The drain plug has a magnet on it to catch any filing floating around. Mine was covered when my input bearing colapsed.

I had a similar sound and found the dual mass flywheel and input bearing stuffed. The spogot bush can also colapse but gives more of a squawking sound.
    Cheers, David.

Everything looks ok but will check the fan shroud wouldnt be the first broken one i have seen an would never think to check engine mounts as a reason for the fan to hit talk about thinking outside the box!

What oil do you guys use for manual transmission? Will be shopping at covs discount haha will do transfer box another week

This is a good point. If the mounts are shot, the torsion of the motor under deceleration could be deflecting it enough to be touching the fan on the cowl. It'll probably be right at the bottom in the middle.

when you said it sounds like something was hitting the fan, i thought you were talking figuratively like "the **** is hitting the fan", as it would be if your gearbox was on the way out, rather than literally, as in it actually does sound like something hitting the fan.

All I know is I've just last week put a new Ashcroft Transmissions R380, DMF & Clutch kit in mine and its unbeliveably quiet compared to before, seems to be even 50% less engine noise when I open the vent flaps, the DMF was cactus but I never knew it was, also had a throw-out bearing vibration thru the clutch pedal just as you touched down on the pedal, that is gone too.

using Castrol Syntrans 75w-90 in the gearbox

Had similar symptoms when the layshaft bearings went in my defender R380 gearbox.
Have been advised to use ATF in the R380 rather than gear oil. Wierd, I know, but its in the owners manual too
    Cheers,
    Alex
