    Rear Axle Sick - Silver Oil - Help!

    Just done a long overdue oil change on Daisy's axles. Front axle was fine but not the rear. The oil came out silver - very very silver. The magnetic plug had a huge lump of silver paste on it and there was what looked like a short (5mm) length of roller pin in the sludge.

    On the plus side, there are no oil leaks from either the diff or each end of the axle and when I opened the filler plug (I removed it before dropping the drain plug) I got a dribble of (silver) oil so the diff was at least filled properly.

    Also on the plus side, until the horror of the silver oil, there have been no clues that anything was amiss.

    I am still at the panicky stage, frantically flicking through the workshop manual and e-bay in search of random spares.

    Can anyone offer any advice that will either bring me down from my current low hover or confirm that Daisy is in for a long rest and I'm going to be cramming 3 kids into a mini for the next few weeks.....

    That piece of roll pin will be part of the pin that holds the diff cross-shaft in place. They commonly break. If you are lucky the piece hasn't gone through the the gears. The metal fuzz on the plug is probably from wear in the hemisphere where the cross-shaft has been moving. A rebuild with at least a new hemisphere will be required or a replacement second-hand diff (much cheaper).

    second hand diff

    I'd suggest that you get a second hand diff. I got one with new bearings fitted installed for less than $900.

    I as just about to link an eBay sale for a second hand diff, but it might have been seen as advertising lol (no it's not my auction).

    Type "Land Rover Discovery 2 - Differential" into eBay Australia, not too expensive for a drop in unit.

    The planetary gears on them also do break all of the tops off them which will generate your nice silver paste.

    My rear diff failed recently in the same way. I got a metal clonk during acceleration and overrun from the diff, checked the oil and it was like a silver paste - full of metal shavings. Removed the diff and found the roll pin snapped with damage to the gears. I got a second hand replacement diff with two circlips instead of the roll pin. I was told this is an older type of diff from early D2.

    TC apparently causes the issue

    Pinion in diff carrier loads up when traction control works, causing pinion hole to become oval over time. Clunking diff is a giveaway. Plus siilver oil and lots of metal.

    This also happened to me last year. Snapped pinion and planetary gears in pieces. Luckily no damage to the crown wheel. I Bought a 2nd hand diff for $200 and took me about 5 hrs to install. I'm no mechanic by any stretch and just followed the Rave CD. With the money I saved by doing it myself, I bought an Ashcroft ATB to install in my original diff.
