Checking transfer case level
Hi guys,
Have had an eventful trip for the last 7 weeks through Alice springs, NT, WA including Gibb River road into broome. Have had the dreaded auto trans cooler pips blow twice, first time both pipes replaced in Alice Springs, second time inlet hose repaired by Pirtek in Darwin (brilliant -no problems since). After the Gibb, coming into Broome I noticed some oil spots on back door/window and camper stone guard. The local mechanic says it is a leaky transfer case and I needed to replace both seals. After ordering them last Friday, they got incorrectly posted and won't b here till Friday. Unfortunately I'm up in cape leveque and can't be back to have them replaced as I need to keep heading south to get home in time. Apparently the leak is not that bad.
I'd like to check the transfer case level but have little to no idea about how to do so.
Any clues/ suggestions will b most welcome.
Also I'm not sure if I try to get it fixed on the road ( maybe port hedland or karratha in the next couple of weeks) or if it can wait till I get back to Adelaide in 5 weeks.
If I should get it done - any suggestions of who can do it in hedland or karratha?

Depends how much it is leaking and where from
Check the oil regularly! you need a half inch drive ratchet and extension its the bung to the left of the hand brake as you look toward the front.
Keep it topped up
If its not too bad I would continue through to Whyatts in Geraldton they would be your best bet.
Not really sure about Hedland but I wouldn't be getting it done in Karratha unless I had to.

if it is just the transfer case just keep topping it up. this site is a good reference point.

a 75w-90 oil is required, same for diffs, nulon do one which is in most repco/supercheaps.

Now, lets hope I'm not getting confused with the gearbox. I always do both at the same time, so have to remember which is which!!
I'm pretty sure (google suggests I'm right) you need a 1/2" drive wrench. It goes into the fill plug which looks something like this:

It is next to the hand brake drum.

Very easy to check, you just need the 1/2" drive socket wrench. Once it's open, if oil doesn't start to drip out, poke something solid in there, like a clean screwdriver to check how far down it is. DON'T use a stick on the ground next to you in case it breaks....
No need to get it stupidly tight again. Just enough to stop it leaking.
