    New Snorkel fitted.

So I had been shopping around a bit for a Snorkel. I believed Safari to be the best but I also think they rip us off with the price they ask and I refuse to be ripped off. So I looked around for the best copy Icould find and came up with Full Boar.

    http://stores.ebay.com.au/Direct4x4accessories?_trksid=p2047675.l2563

I had quite a bit of trouble with getting the thing delivered. The eBay advert estimated up to 12 days to deliver but after several unanswered messages to the seller it still wasn’t even sent after 14 days. The seller eventually replied and offered to give me a 20% refund for my trouble. It endedup taking roughly 4 weeks to Darwin. The seller claims to be in SA, I have no reason not to believe him so 4 weeks to deliver was pretty poor. I would have been happier with just some more communication from the seller. Just a couple of words to apologize for not being able to send it because he was busy with other work or he was away on holidays or anything to put my mind at rest would have been appreciated. I get a bit worried when I pay over $200 and then message the sender and don’t hear anything for over a week. I was ready to make a complaint to eBay but it arrived just in time.

Any way this is what I received. I am very happy with the snorkel itself given it was well over half the price of a Safari and I can’t say it is of much less quality. I know there is debate about the plastic used but I’mn ot convinced. I think the biggest difference is the Safari has a couple more mounting bolts but this fitted up nice and secure with what it has. I cant see the extra 2 that Safari have being needed or noticed. The pattern to drill the holes was the only thing that left me a little concerned when I was drilling into my guard with a 70mm hole saw.

This is the patterned that got me a bit worries about marking holes with. You will see that one of the holes was way out to start with.

As you can see I made sure the pattern was accurate as I could in fitting it up to the quarter panel. The plastic sheet, while not adhesive, sort of sticks to the guard and is good and firm in place. I think part of the later problem of the hole locations comes from the plastic sheet though. It does have some stretch with is no good for accurately marking holes.

So the instructions say to drill 4mm holes first and then with a stepped drill bit, open up the mounting holes to 16mm. This gave me more concern because the mounting bolts are only 8mm so why 16mm. Well I find outlater that this is to allow for the dodgy locations of the holes.

So then I start on the 70mm holes. Now I didn’t know any different at this stage but they the bottom of the holes should align with the fold in the panel. Mine didn’t.

Now I should have taken more photos in between this section.

This is where the snorkel fitted early on with the initial holes. It looked good from the outside.

This is just a little sag away from weight. It naturallywanted to fit up nice.

But inside was a different story.

Now the instructions actually say to file out the holes witha rat tail fill to get snorkel to fit in the right place. (different words but same meaning)

This was the end result to get the snorkel where it needed to be to line up with the existing hole through the inner guard. You can see the front 70mm hole was too low. All the holes for the mounting bolts needed, what I think, excessive filing.

All the bolts were loctited in and it mounted up well in the end. The 8mm bolts have some very big washers on them so they clamp what’s left of the guard and snorkel adds plenty more strength to the structure.

I’m going to have to take some more photos but in the end. Unless you saw these pictures, nobody would ever know what lies behind the snorkel, it looks of very reasonable quality, fits up very neat and all the holes are well hidden. For the price I am very happy but I’d just like the pattern to be improved on.

I’m still waiting on my 20% refund before I leave the sellerfeedback on eBay. If it’s like his communication, I guess he’ll get to it, it awhile.

    Happy Days.

Yeah, I know all about that gut wrenching feeling as the drill bit bites and the alloy curls up! I had a Safarie, Got it 2nd hand but was like new, I spent a whole morning checking , measuring , and triple checking the template location and markings!
Instead of going 70mm right up I went 60mm and then used my air die grinder with a coarse file bit to take it out slowly . Just kept fitting it up and checking, then take more off, repeat, until it was all neatly fitted up!
Slow and painful but I knew I had spare metal to work with! Its easy to take off, hard to build up again! But yours looking good.
    Cheers Scott

line up with bits from the air box

Nice write up! So good to see piccies - I'm always in too much of a rush!

One question - where the Full Boar snorkel comes through the inner guard how does it connect with tube from the air box? Is it easy to seal securely?

Just about to buy and fit a snorkel myself. I tried to buy a Southdown from the UK but can get no reply from them at all despite several messages. Maybe they've gone bust or something...

    thanks

Nicely done, but that's exactly why I don't trust cheap snorkels.
When it comes to the air intake, I'd like it to be as close to perfect as possible.
I've seen a mates ute that he put on its side, the safari snorkel did more damage to the car than the roll-over, it's that strong

I have absolutly no doubt this is just as strong. The snorkel is fine. In fact I think some parts are better finished than the Safari. It's just the pattern provided to mark out the holes on the side of the car that let it down. If all the holes had been in the right place, I'm sure you'd all be saying wow thats great and more than half the price of Safari.

My brother had a really good mate who fits Safari Snorkels for ARB but refused to fit a Safari snorkel for my brother outside work. My brother got a bit anoyed with him because they are reasonably good mates. I suspect he didn't want my brother to see how shoddy the work is behind the snorkel.

It's exactly the same as Safari. There is a metal part that fits up to the inner guard (the pannel on the side of the engine bay) and then the snorkel fits inside of that. Just as with a Safari you need to apply a generous amount of Sikaflex to both the inside of the metal part and the outside of the snorkel.

I'll take some more photos tomorow. I have complete confidence in the sealing to the inner guard and the airbox. My only mild concern is the oval shapped tube between the inner guard and the air box. I will sikaflex all the connections of the tube to the box but to leave it removable I dont want to sikaflex the tube to the inner guard. I'll be using foam which I think could leak slowly if under water for too long like if I got stuck in a river or something.

I bought one of this snorkel from eBay too but only paid around $135- $145 8 months ago. It come with template but I wish there's more instruction regarding the size of the hole saw. I'm kind of regret not using a larger size when installing mine, ended with 1mm disc grinder butcher around to extend the slot size. I have to say, overall I'm kind of happy with the outcome but would like to get a safari one in the future. I'm not sure anyone aware there is imitation safari snorkel made in China, price is estimate to be around $250 for a new one. If anyone happen to have one, please share the thought.

    Thanks!

Was it the same seller? There are still plenty on eBay for about that $135 mark but I thought the support for this one would be better given the good description and well layed out eBay shop.

This seller also show how his are finished better than some of the other copies. I think it's better finished than a Safari. It's the small things like how smooth the seams are, the bracket on the "A" pillar is provided with black screws and rivets which match the black plastic cover on the "A" piller. Safari are silver.

The instuctions were good and detailed it was just the template.

Well I can't really remember which eBay seller, by looking at the picture it pretty similar. My have the same plate with black bolts and rivet to the pillar, can't guarantee is the same. One thing for sure item arrived very quick. Maybe you can checkout mine when you driving pass next month, but for the price I paid, I can't really complaint mate.

This is how mine seals through the guard.

It looks rough but it's not at all that bad. I had the camera very close becasue the ACE/STEERING reservior is on the way.
