I think someone on here has an excellent tutorial on how to rebuild them, and you can buy kits to do so.
Pretty easy job AFAIK.
Hi everyone,
My D2 is sitting in a friends driveway because it won't start.
My uneducated guess is starter motor as we tried to jump start it and the same click.
How hard is it to replace?
Any tips or should I just buy one and replace it on the weekend? I'm sure a couple of us can figure it out?? :-)
Pete.
The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
Thanks Muppet justinc.
I'll try sourcing the repair kit locally. The link will come in handy.

I've just done this job recently. I didn't have time to wait for the parts to arrive in the post so I got the parts from a local auto electrician for $40. I think they are common to other vehicle starters.
The biggest pain was getting the starter out, the difficult to get to bolt was really tight. Once the starter is out fitting the kit is a doddle.
Give the starter motor/solenoid a tap with a hammer while someone turns the key, and it should start so you can at least get it home.
Are the V8 starters the same as the TD5 or are there similar kits available?
Before you get too carried away, try checking the terminal connections on the battery and make sure they're tight.
If OK there, change the battery for a known good one from another vehicle.
Often if the battery has dropped a cell or 2, no amount of jumper leads will get you going.
Really?
Time to google batteries for diesel engines.. I'm fairly sure there's something about the different engines..
Now I'm really confused. I'll admit I'm more than happy to not have to pull the starter motor out. Also just as happy to do it so I know where it's at. Just a little sick of the whole experience so far in terms of having no confience in the thing.![]()
So, this morning I was all mopey about the start motor and if I could do it.
I'm happy to report I'm now on top of the world.
One starter motor pulled out, contacts and plunger replaced, starter motor back on the engine, fires up first go!
Woo Hoo... first time ever to do such a thing!
Thank you to everyone on the forum... I'd studied the process so much I did it all without reference to anything during the day.
