    dash cigar lighter removal

has anyone got any tips how the dash lighter is mounted into the dash?

I'm about to pull mine out to mount a dual USB power point in the same spot, but just wondering if ill need to reshape the back of the dash for it to work

If its the one in the top right of the centre console it's a bit of a PITA to remove. I tried to remove it to replace the light globe but ended up removing the centre console as I couldn't extract it in situ. Removing the console is not a difficult job and the workshop manual description assisted.

    Cheers

Stick one of these (or similar) into the hole...

    Quicker
    cheaper
    easier
more versatile (still use cig lighter for power)
chuck it out and replace when you bust the USB port (which you will)

    regards

I don't have a workshop manual for it yet, but ill have to look into one soon,

    and

yes I know there are cheaper things I can just push in a will work. But I don't have anything that I need to power with a cig lighter plug, apart from the fridge.
doing it like this is more work and headache but that's ok,

    Here's what you do.
As Steve (first one) says, you can't really remove it without removing the centre console. Easy job though.
Unscrew the shifter nob (manual) or yank it off, (auto). Remove gaiter or shroud if auto and disconnect sport button cable.
Unscrew tc lever nob, remove gaiter.
Take everything out of the centre console, undo the two screws in it.
Pull off the window switch panel, unscrew the underside facia panel, remove the switch wiring.
Pull the handbrake lever up to give you better access, may need to disconnect so make sure the wheels are chocked.
Undo the two screws up near the TC lever.
    Console should then lift up.
Then you can get at the cigar lighter with ease.

Or just go in hard like I did with a screw driver, break it and then chuck it out.

I put one of the ARB/Narva ones in its place now that twists and locks so that the plugs don't rattle out.

But it's still a cig type plug

At least the USB insert thingy won't rattle out now though

    Thanks heaps,

I was thinking about the screwdriver, break, smash and bin method, but although its fool proof it has sometimes being found to lead to bigger parts getting put in my bin
