check the cardon uni on the front tailshaft, and all the unis for that matter. The next would be the harmonic balancer.

Today my d2a td5 auto started making some strange noises and developed a bit of vibration.
At idle it runs fine under acceleration and cruising it is fine.
However when I take my foot off the accelerator at speed, the symptoms appear and remain until the vehicle stops or I apply the throttle again.
The sound is kind of like a fan belt slipping mixed with a rotational rubbing noise - and vibration.
I got my girlfriend to rev the vehicle in neutral while I was looking under the bonnet but it only does it whilst moving - makes it a bit hard to see what's happening.
It also happens regardless of the air con being turned on or off.
Any help much appreciated!!

The front prop shaft was the first thing I checked. It was rebuilt with greasable joints about 40k km ago by MR automotive and I have also extender the ac drains. It seems fine- although there is a lot of rotational movement in it between the transfer case and diff?
So I'll get the serpentine belt off and check for seized or loose pulleys etc
Why would it only happen under deceleration?
Cheers matt
It's happening on the Over-run I.e the input that turns the axles/diffs/shafts, etc is at the road end, not the gearbox/engine end, so any slop in the system is being reversed, if that makes sense.
I found that when I was running no front prop, as well as now on my temporary single uni prop that it buzzes/makes noise on the over-run.
Check the diffs oils? Try removing a shaft at a time and running with the CDL in to see if it changes?
Yeah could be the front diff, there isn't any slop in the rear shaft and the noise is definitely coming from the front end. If I don't find anything re the pulleys I'll pull the front shaft and see if I still get the noise.
Hmm, Oki, Noise/ vibration on over run is nearly always , though not exclusive to, drive train. Unis, under load the worn bits tend to be locked up tight, deceleration will have them running loose, hence noise. Same with diff gears and bearings, check your oils for glitter, not the gary sort but!Another port of call will be your engine mounts and the geargox mounts. Check them with a torch and lever.

Thanks guys, will dump the diff oil. I reallydontwant to have to spend $$$ on the car ATM but if I need a new diff at least I could put in a locker!!
Just had a bit of a saga with a new auto cooler hose and am over it.
You might as well![]()
They're a right bastard, and I get what you mean.
Some days you like at your to-do list and think "this is exactly what I'm after, a good day of rolling around in the dirt, cutting my fingers, getting to know my vehicle and solving a few issues"
Other days you look at it and go "get ****ed, I'm going to go watch the footy. Bloody Land Rovers"
Not a probYeah Sagas can be a little trying sometimes, ask any Norse story teller!
Or me regarding a certain auto repair..........................

Sooo, dropped diff oil and and it's perfect.
I went back to the front shaft and really got in there with a big screwdriver to apply some torque - guess what?
It's completely shagged. Is 40,000k an acceptable lifespan of a rebuilt, greasable shaft that gets regular greasing? I have a 40mm lift so a little extra stress on it. It also cops a fair bit of water / dust due to off road work.
Anyway....need it fixed ASAP for a Vic - Qld dash over Christmas, so thinking a tom woods shaft to bolt straight in.
What did you do with yours recently Muppet?
Cheers
Matt
