    Discovery 2 leaky RHF wheel???

    Hi There

I was coming home from a long trip away and I found little oil spots sall down the drivers side of the Disco 2.

I went under the car and there was a smell of diff oil and it was really wet down there. I checked the front diff oil and it was fairly low. I filled it back up, went for a drive and came back and it was leaking our pretty badly.

Here is a video of what it looks like

What should I do to fix it?

I had a less impressive version of the same thing a month or two ago. It was the outer seal on the diff. I put it into the shop and had the cv boot replaced at the same time.

If you are reasonably mechanically minded it's not a difficult fix at all. The hardest part was seating the new seal in the end of the diff housing, I ended up cutting 45cm off the end of a wooden broom handle and trimming the flat end so that it fitted around the seal edge without pressing on the lip, then slowly driving it in a bit at a time. Factor a couple of hours taking it easy. Do both sides while you've got the diff drained. Seal is an FTC5258.

And you'll need a torque multiplier or large torque wrench to torque up the hub nuts to 450nm.

I didn't think you need to undo the hub nut just to do the inner seal

That's if you're removing the bearing from the axle. Instead, remove axle and hub as an assembly. Easy to do by yourself, takes a little patience. Have a clean foam earplug handy to temporarily plug the ABS sensor hole.
