If you can do the work yourself get it home and get the head off. I would be surprised if there is any bottom end damage, in my experience it is very resilient to what has happened to your engine, it is the top end that suffers.
I had similar circumstances of overheating to you and ended up replacing the head with an AMC Turner head from the UK. No problems since, does not use oil (390,000K) and goes like new all done for less than $4,000. If you can't do it yourself get someone to look at the head first.

What on earth was the question you asked them!!!!???

For that price I'm sure that you could fit a fully reconditioned engine, ---- here in Tasmania !

Then go home with change in your pocket.

And you would get to trip around Tassie while the engine was being fitted.
    .
All I asked was for an appraisal of what damage gas been done and how much to repair!! A repair was not even an option - they just went straight with " the engine needs replacing!". So assuming a recon engine is $5000, $10k for labour!!😨😱
Either there on a very good hourly rate or it's gonna take them a very long time to repair! lol. Of course there is the option they don't want the job!

It sounds like a "we've got a lot of work on, but we'll turn some away for $10k" to me.

Are you any good on the tools yourself?

Try these engines if you haven't already considered ? It might be cheaper easier solution to being ripped off by mechanics and waste your time and money trying to fix it yourself ....

    $10k labour on a Td5, that's got to be taking the ****.
I'd be getting a second opinion or two. Find someone prepared to actually investigate and see if the engine does need replacing, or just the head.
Throwing money at a Td5 and hoping it will fix it without actually checking what needs to be fixed is a good way to go broke, as previously stated they're an incredibly tough engine, keep the cooling system in good nick and it will be fine.

In the end, I bit the bullet, hired a trailer and borrowed a land cruiser ( I know...., I had to swallow my pride!) and towed it back to Newcastle. Took it to 4x4 spares at kotara, who I was lead to believe were the "experts" locally. After a quick look, they've said it's definitely blown a head gasket, probably cracked the head, buggered the injectors and prob popped a ring or two!! They say it needs a replacement engine - total repair bill....... Wait for it......$15000!!!😥

Anyone suggest another mechanic capable of such a job locally? Anyone have an experience of Modern Motors at Dungog?

Any progress? What did you do?
