Thread: Sudden increase in diesel use

If you have a fuel smell investigation needed most likely fuel
pressure regulator or fuel pipe.
Leaking injector seals usually mean increase in oil level as it leaks
into the oil
Leaking injector washer can mean combustion gas pressure getting
into the fuel rail in the head it can over pressurise FPR and cause
leaks.

So check for external leaks and keep a good eye on oil level and
sniff the dipstick for fuel smell.

If it smells pretty strong in the cabin most likely a leaking fuel pressure regulator.
Have a look at the drivers side rear section of engine,need to remove acoustic cover.Check for leaks and strong smell of diesel. Also check fuel lines to fuel cooler same area.
Check for leaks on bell housing as well.Fuel ends up running down to there from the regulator.

If it was loosing that much fuel from the reg you will see it all under the vehicle and on the tailgate,a little bit goes along way!!!!!
I would be concerned about the kero smell.Suggests to me too much diesel getting into the piston and not combusting completely.
Check that its not making oil in the sump as suggested.May be a failed/failing injector or injector seal.

I am no expert but I was told yesterday by a Land Rover dealer mechanic that the D2 sometimes rub through the filler tube to the tank, that could leak a lot of fuel and explain diesel smell inside.

D2 have plastic lines coming in and out of the fuel tank at the fuel pump, these can rub through resulting in a leak. Eventually you will see dampness around the area of the tank and chassis. You will get some drips onto the ground when you park the vehicle.

The fix is easy as the D2 has access from under the carpet in the luggage compartment.

Fuel pressure regulator, cooler etc on drivers side of engine is another possibility.

Did a few checks today, and no obvious leaks at the fuel tank, and minimal fuel/oil leaking down to the outside of the sump, so I'm not ruling out the FPR, but currently seems unlikely (plus I replaced it 12 months ago). Oil level not increasing in the sump as far as I can see, but will keep an eye on that.

So best theory at the moment could be a dodgy sensor. Plan of attack is to monitor oil level in sump, monitor fpr for leaks, and try disconnecting various sensors one at a time to see if it makes a difference for say half a tank. I've got a nanocom, and can't see any sensors with out of whack values at the moment.

OK, this is a new one for me. Will have a squiz tomorrow evening.

Can you follow behind it whilst being driven to see if the kerosene smell is worse??? Watch for dark smoke too.
