    TD5 Water temp??

    HI gurus,
Have a 2000 disco td5 with 302ks on it. Recently fitted VDO temp guage to keep an eye on things as everyone says the original doesn't move a lot. Well my VDO guage consistently reads between 66 degrees and 70. Even on the hottest days and towing the camper it only goes to 71 maybe. The factory needle doesn't move at all. I though maybe thermostat stuck open so changed this but still get same temps.
What temperature should this run at??
I would believe around 85 from what I have read. Am I missing something with this temp so low??
Apart from this runs fantastic with good power and economy for a 2.7tonne house brick.

Hi Landroverjack, your VDO gauge could be reading low.
I have a watchdog TMS fitted. On a really hot day in stop start traffic in Sydney it will climb into the eighties quickly, then settles around 85-87.
On the open freeway it settles around 68 to low seventies, though I haven't checked that on a scorching hot day yet.

Well, I'm not a guru, just a normally puzzled TD5 D2 owner, but according to the RAVE dvd, the main thermostat begins to open at 82degrees C, is fully open at 96 degrees C. My recent experience towing a heavy trailer to Gayndah, on one of our very hot days recently, is the temp [ I have a 'welltempered ' heat sensor fitted] rose quite fast to 86-89, held there for a while, then slowly dropped to 78-79. Only rose again going up the Blackbutt range, but then only to 85. I think a lot depends on where your sensor is fitted. I have been told that the temp. sensed by the engine coolant temp. sensor, and sent to the ECU, can be a few degrees higher than sensors fitted to the outside of the engine. From what I understand, you can't replace the engine coolant temp sensor, as it is part of the engine management system. However, any sensor/ gauge fitted will give a good indication of what's happening , in real time . Bob

I suspect your gauge is reading low, or your sensor is located in an unusual spot.
Using my nanocom on instrument mode in my D2a the range is 88 - 94 in normal running. Towing a trailer up a long steep hill in 44 degrees ambient temp i got it up to 104 with EGT at 700. My radiator is only 20K old and the second engine has done about 65K. Dave (blaknight?) commented recently that if all is well mechanically the temp can safely go higher.

ALL you guys are legends for all the quick replys. Just got home so now able to respond.
First, the sender unit is a VDO but don't know the range, it was supposed to be compatable to the guage dial range.
2nd, sender is drilled and tapped directly opposite the original, which is in the housing at the head. So this would get the correct or same temp as the original one.
3rd, I am a dunce and completly forgot that my nanacom has the function to check temp. Plugged it in and presto, reads 83 degrees at cool idle and up to 85 as I went around the block.

Conclusion:- I am a dunce for not using the nanacom and you guys rock for all the responses.
I will need to research if I have the correct or a faulty sender unit..............

nice to know at least that so far the temps are in range.

Not a dunce, just using a different learning technique. You should be feeling relieved!

Not a dunce, mate, you asked the question. No question is too foolish to ask. It's how we all learn, Bob

I think you may find your sender needs an earth - the factory sender has it built in (earth).
