    Oat coolant/ green stuff

My 99 td 5 has green coolant in it since I bought it last year.
Hunter & Cutthill tell me to leave it there as it is impossible to remove it all and oat and green coolant congeal if mixed. Anyone got any comments and proper answers. Cheers Nick.?

    Flushing

It you are wanting to change over to OAT it's usually pink/red
but other colours are on the market.
Drain and fill with pure water bleed etc run for a couple of days
then do the same again you should have got rid of the green stuff
an then fill with an OAT mixture remember when you drain the
coolant via the drain plug on the steel pipes below the radiator
you will not fully drain the coolant system you only get 8litres
out the block pipework heater etc will hold some fluid total
    fluid approx 11.5litres.
that's why you need to fill couple of times to purge the green stuff.

If it gives you piece of mind to do this its a good thing if you are
going to change to OAT it's a good idea to remove and inspect
ALL hoses and clean the stubs that the hoses fit onto OAT finds
leak paths more than glycol or water.

A new cap and thermostat wouldn't do any harm either and you will
have the coolant system in good order for a while.

    coolant

    Thanks for that Pete.
One question I have is , Does the green stuff cause any problems to the system. I guess it is not good to have the the green or all discos would use it.
Will I get any chemical degradation if there are traces of the green (glycol) in the system still.
The local LR workshop told me not to bother changing . Any thoughts on the matter?

OAT doesnt cause a reaction between dissimilar metals, plus its a long life product.
a non-oat is fine in the V8 if changed regularly.

beware though,, the oat will find ANY weepholes

    Green stuff

The green stuff is your issue you don't know what it is glycol or OAT
and what mix ratio it is.
By flushing and checking over and then fitting OAT you have a known
    baseline.
Any chemical residue from the green stuff should be minimal if flushed
    well a couple of fills.
I always change all fluids on any secondhand car I buy even if it looks
new and service books say its just been changed,
That way I know it's at the right level and the correct grade of fluid is
    in.
The green stuff would probably be ok but you don't know it's age or type
also it's not the recommended stuff.
It's a bit like running semi synthetic oil that's fine if you change it more
often but you can't blame LR if its fails cos you ain't doing what is recommended.

When you refill best to put your OAT in neat approx 5.5litres first then
top up and bleed that way you know you will get a good mix and
not have a low mix in the car and a couple of litres of 50/50 in a
    container.
