    How high is too high?

Just had to pull over after getting the battery light on, losing power steering and seeing the temperature rise!
Yep, fan belt was off (TD5). No idea why yet, getting it towed home. Only 8km luckily.

However, got the nanocom on it quickly and had the coolant at 115. Any idea how bad the damage is going to be? At 240000 it needs a new head gasket anyway , but would like to wait a few weeks if I could.

If you pulled over relatively quickly after it happened then it should all be fine. I wouldn't worry about the temperature spike. It probably occurs every time you park your vehicle as there's no longer airflow through the radiator and the water pump is no longer spinning.

Out of interest why do you think it needs a new headgasket? Km's aren't an indicator of requiring a new headgasket. Plenty of high km vehicles that still go strong and plenty of low km vehicles that have required a replacement...

    Don't panic

+1 on first reply if you pulled over as soon as alternator light
appeared you would have have the same effect to cooling
system as stopping to fuel up etc.

Well, I discovered the problem. For some reason the bolts holding the ACE pump have sheared. Now I've got to work out why they have sheared. None of the pulleys or pumps seem to have seized. I did have the ACE pump off a couple of months ago, perhaps I under/overtorqued it putting it back on? I'm at a loss ot explain it. I've had a crack at getting the ends of the bolts out of the accessory casing, but no luck so far, easy outs and all.

Anyway, short term fix is to try and get a new serpentine belt tomorrow, without the ACE, so I can get the car back on the road. And then either drill and tap the casing, or find a new casing somewhere so I can get the ACE pump back on the beast.

Did you torque it in accordance to the specifications in Rave?

Well now, I'm not sure I could guarantee that

I'm pretty good at torquing anything directly on the block, but as it gets further away... I've never had an issue with bolts shearing or coming loose in 25 odd years of home mechanicing to date. This might be a little reminder from the gods of precisions perhaps. Unless there's some other explanation for it????

You will need to get the bolts out anyway as non ACE set ups have an idler pulley fitted where the ACE pump sits. So a non ACE belt won't get you going.

When my viscous fan hub went, I was on the noise about to crest a hill. Heard the pinging of ball-bearing ballet in the engine bay, saw the alternator light on, pulled up about 300m down the road.
No problems since then in terms of overheating

Crap. So why have two different belts then?

Any idea what the part number for the Accessory Bracket is? I'm having issues with my RAVE pdf at the moment.

Sorry don't know the part number. The idler is about 1/2 the size of the ACE pump pulley.

It needs the idler pulley or ACE pump to get a suitable path/ angle over the pas pump.
