Thread: Dirty oil 4k after service - and oil is low.

May sound like a dumb question, but does repco sell both filters, or only the bypass filter? (ie you post only hints at one filter being replaced). You could try using a good quality oil flush (cost effective maintenance has a good oil flush product, but others exist) to remove the carbon from the engine. Others may be able to indicate if there are issues with the oil getting dirty so quick. Usually stays clean and is ok for more than 4k.

Repco do sell both filters, I did not replace the centrifugal spinner as it is only 10k old. I have been told that a disco only needs to be serviced (basic) every 20k, But I do it at 10k anyway. I do the spinner every 20k as it is a secondary. This is mechanics advice so I guess I would be mad not to listen. But if anyone wants to correct anything mentioned here then it would be very handy to know. Id hate to have my little Rover pop its clogs because of something simple and avoidable.

Ummm....Spinner is the primary filter; bypass is the secondary filter - Source of information - Workshop manual. Every 60k for bypass; every service ( A&B ) for centrifugal - Source of information- maintenance worklist. In this case the mechanic got it wrong. Change the oil, change the centrifugal filter.

if your using an oil sucker to pull the oil out of the dipstick change your oil every 7500 KM and your filters every 15000Km because you're only getting half the oil out. (or whatever half your decided filter interval is)

last time I was pressing numbers and did oil analysis with the oil changes

10K km was too early, the oil was still good
15K Km was too early but the oil was starting to let go.

I got that far with testing in big red and decided that under normal conditions servicing every 15K km was as far as Id risk it. I was using nulon oils at the time so your milage may vary.

I change oil and filters every 12k. LR parts.

Oil is cheap, rebuilds not so cheap! !0kms is a good in between average I always think. If all the cars done is highway work and long runs, 15-20 is possible. Stop start, towing, short runs, slow work, off road etc and 10 is maximum , even 5 is not out of the equation! and always full filter change! Again they are cheap!

Im convinced to keep them at 10k now. And yes I think i'll always replace both filters as well.

If your oil has gone black so quick a couple of filter changes in between a normal change wont hurt. The centrifugal filter is easy to change, just be very aware of the fragility of the threads on the tiny bolts Helicoiling them is a good plan as is only using a screwdriver handle type socket driver, hard to get a lot of torque on 1 if you are sensible
I often change a filter if Im close to a change and know I wont get it done on time.
