May sound like a dumb question, but does repco sell both filters, or only the bypass filter? (ie you post only hints at one filter being replaced). You could try using a good quality oil flush (cost effective maintenance has a good oil flush product, but others exist) to remove the carbon from the engine. Others may be able to indicate if there are issues with the oil getting dirty so quick. Usually stays clean and is ok for more than 4k.

Helicoiling them is a good plan as is only using a screwdriver handle type socket driver, hard to get a lot of torque on 1 if you are sensible
