Thread: How to completely get rid of MAF on de-EGR'd TD5

Will give the other two sensors a proper clean (again) before I jump in and do the mod.
Was told the map recently put on is a mild stage 1.
The manifold temperatures after a drive (swiftly for a disco) down country lanes (using a handheld digital thermometer) on the manifold before turbo, were at the highest 350*c
Only problem is the high readings coming from the new MAF.
Probably due to the new fuel map giving more fuel... So drawing more air! But with standard MAF bypassed will it make the manifold temps increase?
As the Ecu thinks it's getting less air, mod fooling it. When actually its getting more! So with the centre exhaust box removed, and more air (& fuel) going in the temperatures should be pretty standard, shouldn't they?
Need to get an EGT gauge fitted to be on the safe side.... 😉
    Will post results.

    Hi
Looked at my ECU PLUGS today and the wire colours are in different locations...
Got rave and other diagrams but nothing equates to your colours or rave??
    It's an '02 disco 15p engine
Pin 12 on black plug is a thick black wire....
Pin 11 on red plug is a yellow and orange wire.....
    I've got a freak of a car!!

Had a new MAF and was going over the max limits due to fueling on map, so fitted a three wire resistor which helped cap the limits but was way over fueling at Revs below 2000....
So today I've finally done the mod (got the right wires this time) as I was only getting 280 miles only on 3/4 of a tank of fuel!!
The mod has evened out the power, but my fuel map is still too high Upto 2000rpm black smoke and under powered. So need to sort this out next!
I've spent several hundred pounds with mapping so far and wish I'd have just gone to alive tuning or similar....
Anyone know a good mapper in the Dorset area??
    Cheers
    Nick

if that symptom you've described happens with the MAF unplugged too(and without any wiring mod) the problem is not there, it's or a wrong fuel map in the ECM or some other thing, replace the depression controll(crankcase breather) valve if you know it's old but you really need a live data log to see all the sensor readings cos for example a bad AAP(airbox) sensor can give you those symptoms, the MAP/IAT as well...and there are many more possible reasons, mine was smoking bad when the injector clearences were way out of line too, adjusting them helped a lot

...and check fuse F2 in engine bay to rule it out

    Sierraferry MOD

I have done this MOD 8 - 10 months ago...... I am Happy..

I feel my D2 uses a" little less fuel"...and has got rid of a flat spot at low speed and low revs....

My MAF is NOT plugged in..

It was an easy MOD to try out and easily reversable..

I have NOT checked EGT temps.....

But I also only cruise.. I do not tow 3 tonne at 110 kms.....

I have a Triupmh Spares ECU mod..... Which I feel is the cause of the high fuel usage...

    Cheers

    EDIT.......PS Thank you Sierraferry..........

Since then i've made some tests with the MAP signal routed to the MAF too and on my car the results are the same...which means it works perfect and better than with the MAF unplugged, though i think mine has a very original fuel map

Sierrafery , I thought you had a stage 2 tachosoft map , or was the last comment Transylvanian irony
Nwtasd2 is yours auto?, if yes are the shift patterns notably different?

Yes i have, both stages from tachosoft i swap the chips according to my needs but i also have two ECM's which i used to swap too and the tests with positive results were with the original unmodified MSB101183, this one seems to not be affected at all what ever i do with the MAF signal... with the stage 2 of tachosoft i dont use this mod cos i've got higher EGTs than with the operating MAF

So......to simplify , Don't do this mod with anything other than a factory fuel map ,, because the ecu is partially blinded from using tps voltage as a substitute for maf input to ecu , allowing more fuel for a given throttle position. Running this set up with a map that has already had the parameters increased, will result in excessive egt's and possible meltdown................correct me if I'm wrong

I don't quite understand what you mean... the gist is that it depends on the fuel map configuration, about how important in that map is the air flow in the fueling calculations, there are maps where the MAF input is almost neglectable in fueling cos it's calculated from MAP/IAT and AAP readings and the MAF mainly for EGR controll... but i dont want to start this again cos i've had some "traumas" after this thread ...as long as you have EGT gauge, the car runs fine and no increased EGT then it's OK, i've seen examples from both extremes...simple as that
