I dont really know, thats a good point those as it does sound exactly like straight cut gears at work. I would think from the work done to the car when I bought it that the T/case would have been all stock equipment.

Some times you need high range to get the momentum going to get over a sandhill or similar, just can't get enough speed in low range without changing gears (losing momentum during gear shift). I't a matter of getting to know your vehicle.

We, obviously, all are taking for granted the tyre pressures are already correct for soft sand

Exactly the process I am getting into now. I have come from driving this, to driving a much heavy, turbo diesel automatic. Such a different vehicle. But I am loving it.

I agree, if you need 5th gear in low range you are driving too fast. The strongest gear you have is low 4th so you may as well us it. If LOW 5th seems like to correct speed you will probably find HIGH 3rd will be fine.

My opinion is 5th gear is an overdrive, you are trying to achieve the opposite when using low range (under drive). From a mechanical sympathy perspective using LOW 5th is putting unnecessary strain on you drive-train.

As I mentioned in my post, it was mountain work, up the hills in2nd 3rd low, and occasionally down the other side in 4th /5th, a crappy national hwy in png.

And it was not a Disco, so my post was off topic x2
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.
