    A/T cooler pipe replacement...aaaahhhh!

    Hi all
    Td5 auto.
In the midst of trying to replace the left hand (on the A/T cooler)/upper cooler pipe after the hose parted company from the pipe last week.

How in the name of all that's holy are you supposed to undo the union on the gearbox (or do it back up)? I have a 19mm crow's foot that I can get on it, but seems impossible to swing the socket wrench!

Half the day day gone and it needs to be back on the road to get me to work on Monday. Doesn't help doing this on the verge where the tow truck dropped it.
    Any suggestions/experience appreciated.

Mike, when I did mine I took the cross member and the transfer box mounts off and lowered it down for better access. make sure the O-Ring is correctly fitted when you do it up.

    Hi Roger,
Thanks for that, yes if t was on the floor of the garage it would have helped...however, I've proved that it can be done from under the car . Even if I've since learnt that you can access it via the trans tunnel cover
    Cheers

It's been a while but I think I used a socket extension bar then a swivel joint then the crows foot, with the transmission not lowered.
    Cheers

    Hi DM
Yes that was some late advice I received...I considered it, but wasn't sure I could get far enough forward through the top, and now I can't tell you.
I ended up using the crow's foot alone to tighten by hand till it was "tight" then nipped it up with socket wrench & crow's foot. No doubt it's all a lot easier if you're in a garage and can drop the box a bit etc.

One question: I have to have the car running to finalise my fluid top up? And run it through the gears, checking the level? Oh for a pit

Then out with the degreaser and pressure washer, those pipes sure make a mess when they fail

I used 4 car ramps, drove onto the front ones and then jacked up rear to slide the rear ramps under the rear wheels, this gave me a level surface to do the trans service. In your case you won't be able to drive it on.

** Re the top pipe , I found it was still fiddly even with the trans tunnel exposed from the top. Hands were just to big to get access. Lots of swearing and patience strained

** Chemtech CT 14 degreaser concentrate mixed with water and ordinary garden hose cleans up the mess very well.

    Thanks Mario
Yes, I think I even invented some words yesterday...I got about 4 litres into it, so have some drive back and I'll move it into the garage to do the final fill. Only have 2 ramps so I'll try not to burn my nose on the centre muffler!
Chemtech sounds good as it is a hell of a mess

Given that the box is empty, according to UPs guide he filled it normally and ran it for 30 seconds at idle at a time or so, which sucked all the fluid into the system. Did that a couple of times then fill as normal.
I need to try and find a 19mm crows foot locally...
