Thanks for all the reply guys.

Ended up buying from Ebay in SA probably the same seller where DiscoKym bought his with 2 years warranty. It will be here today so can start working on it tonight.

Local auto electrician that advertsises on Ebay had one in his hand, an OEX brand one for $365. It came with a 2 year 40,000 KM warranty, after quizzing him he stated he was happy to back it, has sold quite a few and never had one come back Land Rover or any other model.

Fitted straight in and going fine.

As stated somewhere here it's better to get a new one as you are getting a new vacuum pump for safeties sake.
    Hi DiscoKym,

Are you happy with the alternator? I know it is probably too late to ask but mine is a bit noisy than the old one.

    Hi Dearot,

You had me worried so I went and checked mine...

No noise out of mine. Might be belt or tensioner?? If the same guy he seemed good and backs his product, so send him a message if you have problems.

What about the oil feed line from the head to the front of the alternator. Anyone changing these? or fixing them with a bit of hose and a couple of hose clamps??

Hi Dearot, others, I recently changed my alternator with a "cheap" aftermarket one, complete with vacuum pump.

Re: noise, I can report that mine came partially seized out of the box due to the rear cooling fins rubbing against the rear plate, and I needed to disassemble it and tweak the fins so that they didn't rub.

The old unit was also the same brand, installed by auto-lec at great cost, and using my old vacuum pump. The alternator lasted only 100K, but they were hard K's. The rear bearing was completely shot, the casing was full of dirt and sludge, and the alternator light was beginning to flash intermittantly.

I accept that after market brands may not last as long as more expensive known brands.

Do it myself cost savings: approx $750.00, so I can live with it.

Wasa57 exactly my experience. Aftermarket alternator fitted at great cost ($1,075) by auto electrician no replacement Vac Pump. Lasted 3 years rear bearing shot and shards of metal mangled inside and they had not been hard K's. Replaced myself with Denso OEM including Vac Pump from Rimmers and a big saving.

I just unbolted the oil feed line and used the new bolt / washers, my drain hose wasn't leaking so I popped off the stupid factory clamp, replaced the alternator and clipped the stupid clamp back on no problems.
