2.My mechanic isn't suggesting I replace the head yet, his fix is to keep a special oil up to it, that slows the injectors wearing due to exposure to the diesel in the oil. He has however warned about potential damage to the Turbo. I was told by the other mechanic yesterday that they can run on, rev up, without any throttle and destroy the motor. Not a situation I want to get into obviously. Is my mechanics proposed way of dealing with this issue, the right approach? IMO - no, for issues mentioned earlier. I have to admit to being responsible for the way this has been managed, purely for financial reasons too. As someone said probably false economy.

Stealth a member on here on his post http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-t...ml#post1541752 had roarin8 comment that "The crack was tiny but we did find it and our machine shop fitted a sleeve to the injector port in the head.(The head had to come off again much to the customers dismay) we put it back together and as far as i know it's still going fine. i have noticed a lot on these heads that there are wear marks usually on the rear side of each injector port where the injectors look like they have been rubbing. and yeah these bottom ends will go forever if they don't loose oil pressure from the oil pump bolt falling off!!" Is this sleeve a good idea rather than a new head? I don't know whether I have a crack or whether it is simply porosity as my head hasn't been off I don't think. Oil pump bolt falling off, should I look out for this issue too?The oil pump bolt is worth checking. It takes about an hour to check in addition to a normal oil change. I haven't heard about the sleeve fix. Repair viability is a case by case scenario and could be a great option or cost more than what its worth. i.e hrly rate to find the crack, attempted repair then find it didn't work, strip and replace anyway. I had a crack in the water jacket at number 1 inlet runner. I could have had it welded and refitted the head but the cost and uncertainty of the life of the head made a replacement a simple option. Most workshops want you to leave happy and not come back. Thats why most recommend replacement. I'm going to invest the extra hour and get the oil pump bolt checked, sounds important! I do want to be happy yes, and I don't want to keep pulling the head off, I really don't want to be going down blind gullies, just have to bite the bullet by the sounds of it.
5. Prices quoted KHOR $7k and M. R. Automotive $6k. Both off the top of their head type pricing so would have to drill down a little deeper to confirm scope etc. Scary dollars just the same, you can see why I'm baulking at it. Interesting your comments re labor, will have to look into this a little closer. See quote from Turners attached, I may have allowed too many parts or not enough, Frida from Turners said it looks right. It totals delivered 1490.53GBP x 1.78 = $2653.140 delivered, but as its over $1k Aus it will probably attract GST so plus $265.31 = $2918.45 AUD for parts. T

If you get the Turner Head you will have peace of mind. If you are getting your mechanic to do the job you can leave out the Hylomar Sealant and you are doubling up on injector Seals and Washers in your proposed order. However you might as well leave the rest as is. Yes no escaping the GST. Good luck with the labour charge at least with a new head there should be no surprises.

Total 449.14
Plus a $75 exchange rate charge.
Should I buy this head in Aus?

SupporterTo be honest - if it was me, I would concentrate on getting a proper diagnosis and second opinion as recommended by several here.
You have not actually quantified the oil dilution problem - ie what is the % dilution you are seeing per Month or between changes?
By how much is the oil level rising if at all?
You may be trying to solve a problem that does not exist.

SubscriberWell I just had it serviced and no problems except a faulty ABS Shuttle Valve Switch to get fixed next time.
He also said that the oil pump bolt problem was on a much earlier batch from the factory, where they had forgotten to locktite the oil pump bolts when it was originally installed, not an issue with my 2004 model.
He looked up the history. He did the injector seals, copper washers, bolts etc in 2009 or at 105,000kms or 55,000kms ago. He said that it needs a new head, but I've not ever fronted up with the $ (he's right). He also said it would cost a minimum $5000-$5500 depending what he finds.
He currently has a D2 in with bad motor which was damaged by one bad injector letting in diesel, it has destroyed the bottom end of the motor, bearings and crankshaft, bad news for the owner. Told me that this could happen to mine or the turbo could also go.
He told me to sell the car as the repair is 3/4 the value of the vehicle. He also showed me (its not a showroom, he is a LR mechanic only) a D3 D4 RRVogue and a RRS all in his workshop, I like all of them but the cheapest changover is probably at least $10-15k which I don't have.
So I have a sample of the oil which I am going to get tested, any recommendations in Brisbane for a place who does this? I am also going to watch the oil level like a hawk and monitor it to determine the % of diesel top up of the oil.
What other diagnosis should I be doing?

Wow you are either unlucky or this guy is trying his best to clean out your bank account.!!
ABS shuttle valve faults are usually a broken solder ..fixed with what they call option B at home for about $15. Anew switch wont fix the fault if it's broken solder.
Would not believe his comment on the oil pump bolt .LR were hit and miss .Get it checked or more than the head will be damaged !!.
If the injector seals were done properly 55000 ago you should be good for a long time ..
He sounds like a salesman.!!
Speak to MR AUTO or British Offroad if you havent already ..and steer clear of this bloke .

SubscriberWhy is cleaning me out? I have a price for approx. $3100 for the head and parts kits delivered to Brisbane from Turners in the UK, so that makes the labour and his profit between $1900-$2400. He charges $90/hr so 21-26hrs work roughly, is that a lot?
I did speak to MR Auto he said approx. $6000, without having seen the car.
Wouldn't the oil pump bolt have let go after 10 years and a 160,000kms if it was loose?
I have no idea about the shuttle valve.

Oh I am sorry I must have missed the bit where he gave an adequate reason why you need to replace the head..geez he hasn't even mentioned a head gasket from what I can see .
Why wouldnt you let someone like MR Auto take a look and give their diagnosis .?
My oil pump bolt fell off at 180000km!

Its allowing diesel to mix with the engine oil through porousness or small cracks in the head. He replaced the copper washers and o rings and bolts and diagnosed it in 2009. Further he advised me to replace the head then. Due to financial constraints and ill health I have been unable to do it.

It depends what you mean though, someone on here said I should get someone else to take the head off and have a look. Isn't that $1900-$2400 worth of labour? I spoke to MR Auto told him that KHOR have done the O rings and copper washers etc and that diesel is still leaking into the oil and he immediately started talking a new head.
When you say someone else should have a look at it, what do you propose they do, take the head off?
