    After market starter options td5

    HI All,
The starter on the D2a is on the way out. It growls, it works intermittently and I only put contacts in it about 12mths ago, so I reckon is time for a newy.

Interested to hear if people have used aftermarket replacements. I cant find anyone in Adelaide able to sell an OEM Denso so it looks like its a Chinese copy!

Best price I've found is $250 with 2yr/ 20,000 warranty.
    Cheers
    Dave

I went with the local one from an auto electrician at $250 which was a good price. The wholesaler that supplies him wanted to charge me $325 for the same thing!
Fitted it tonight and it works fine. To get the top nut I used a 3" extension, then two (2!) uni's then a 12" and a 6" extension. Got it from underneath.
The sparky told me you should expect to get 150,000km out of a starter, see how we go!

Ken, you would hope it starts when you really need it, it's ok while your in the road side service , but out back (pardon the pun) one would hope it starts.
I had a cheap high torque starter blow up at the casting that holds it to the motor, the torque was too much for the cheap Chinese cast body to handle. Lucky it was in Metro Sydney so not too stranded.
    Caveat emptor.

    !
No offense, but The wholesaler has done nothing wrong, they are a wholesaler to sell to the trade not to the one off general public. So walk-ins get full list price. Imagine the out cry from mechanics and autoelectrical places who run a business spends heaps annually from a wholsesaler and then find the general public go in and buy one offs and get the trade prices. Mechanics and other trades rely on a margin on parts to survive, it supplements the labour charges.
Next we'll have motorists wanting to go direct to the refineries to fill their tank up and expect the wholesale price that servos get for buying tanker loads.

No offence meant, and no offence taken. To quote Slim Dusty, "A man's gotta find a little bread for his mouth", so we all need to make a crust.
I thought that the sparky was doing a very good price for whatever reason, and you'd hope he still makes something out of it. I was just marvelling out loud that he was willing to take such a smaller margin. No sense of entitlement, although I still carry a trade card.
There was a mob here in Adel called Land Ranger Spares and they gave such good prices that I would sometimes travel across town to buy from them, yet they closed down a year or so ago which makes you wonder if they discounted themselves broke. Incidentally if I hadn't needed it that day you would have been first on the list to enquire about price and availability because you have given excellent service to me previously.
I spent 12 years as a motor mechanic and its tough to have to pay retail sometimes these days, but that's my cup of concrete to shallow! I find I get trade at some places with my tradesman card, and nadda at others so its a case by case thing.
    Peace
    Dave
