    D2 Headlight Bulb Test Blog

Bit of light reading for you Gents - someone very kindly put together a wee test of LED bulbs on a D2.

    LED Headlights or NOT

    Cheers

The headlights are designed for the halogen globes - not for HID or LED. On the Defender the LED conversion works well because the whole headlight assembly is replaced with a unit designed for the LED lighting type. HID works well for the user because they are very bright, but the spread in a halogen designed housing is awful for anyone else. I'm still amazed at how many people think that it's just a matter of changing globe type and that the actual headlight hasn't been carefully designed for the original lighting type.

On a side note, with my D2a I have had excellent results with Narva's Performance range of globes - I think I have the Plus 120's in high beam and a Plus something else with a blue tinge in Low Beam and the lighting is excellent.

I agree Scott....I also fitted improved globes....I think they were Phillips 100+ or something. I just need to upgrade the wiring and I'm done.

I have 130/90s in mine with my old IPF loom that must be 20 years old.
    Works well.
In any case you cannot fit current LEDs with fans that I know of as there is not enough room on the RH side between the back of the headlight and the battery box. HID would be OK BUT.

I have been told they are illegal in NSW and QLD.
I did try them here in Vic, I found they blew too often from overheating and removed them after a cop wasn't happy.

They should be illegal in most states as the wattage is too high.

I know, but with the correct alignment they don't bother anyone, and the chances of being pulled up by a cop are near zero IMHO . Better for 65 year old eyes as night receptors are lost progressively.

Phillip got to agree about the eyes, I used to do a lot of night driving, now even with driving lights on there still is not enough light, yes the eyes are no longer new.

I know where you could get some cheap LED driving lights to compensate for your eyes
