Thread: TD5 - top cover and cam carrier oil leak?

you are correct but I would clean it down first and check it could be weeping from the cam plug (o-ring) at the front of the head

Have a look under the Cam Plug, there will be a film of oil if it is leaking. If so pop it out and thoroughly clean up around the O Ring. Grab a tube of Grey Maxx sealant and run a bead around it, push it back in. You can use the same with the Rocker cover and reuse the old seal.

For the rocker cover you need 13 x ERR7266 new OEM sealing grommets then if you put new quality gasket you dont need any sealant just a very small amount to keep the gasket fixed to the cover untill you refit it... so is mine, no sealant and no leak

As previously stated clean up and check for leaks don't use cheapo gaskets.

Best practice is to use new grommets in the cover they harden and leak, torque them up properly if overtight they can damage the seal.

Genuine is the best for cam plug to some cheapos will fail
quickly I've seen a few fall out and be caught on front loom.

I just degreased and clean the whole engine assembly. The cam plug does seem to be seeping out some oil as well.

I have go to out to BOC later today so might see if the Caterpillar dealer nearby has a replacement seal too ( TD5 CAM PLUG FIX! ).

I cleaned up the entire engine today to help with leak identification. Ran the engine idling for a while - after about 8 minutes I saw this:



Definitely seeping out between the cam carrier and head. Didn't notice any other leak points yet though.

I'm considering throwing a bottle of engine oil stop leak in. Usually I avoid such products, but considering the location of the leak and minor level, going through the proper repair steps seems overly burdens and expensive...

Did you ever fix this leak?

I have the same problem...
