Thread: Problems with my 02 landrover discovery series 2td5

The mechanic is not correct, with a D2 TD5 you have some good German engineering that is quite happy with the heat here. The problem is more likely buying one from a 2nd hand car dealer without a reliable service history and an unloved vehicle. The TD5 is a great car that will only let people down if not looked after by preventative maintenance. What is the mileage and is there any history? Mine has done 415K and is still driving like new so don't despair.

I wonder what parts of a Td5 are actually german designed,,
certainly not the engine, maybe the gearbox?
probably some of the computers,,

Daveymac, buying a 12 year old car and expecting it to function like new is a bit silly,,

The first thing you could do is use a mechanic that likes land rovers,Take it to them for a checkup.

IMHO it is rubbish to suggest the cooling systems are not sufficient.

My 2002 with 168KK on it still has the original radiator which I reverse flushed when I replaced all of the hoses, and it runs at thermostat opening temp of 82=84 C most of the time. Up the Alpine way towing a 900Kg camper trailer it has ONCE touched 103 C. This is the highest and steepest continuous climb I have found in OZ. In the Kimberley in 36=38C it ran on 84 C.

I have to cross fingers here but mine does not leak (much) at present, as I had the transfer case deleaked and I recently replaced the Rocker cover gasket. But I have to admit that they do have a number of leak prone components. Really leaks are a part of an old car. Show me a supermarket parking lot where every space doesn't have oil drops or a dried pool.

Really , 12 year old cars are coming into the category of "owner enthusiast". If your car has 200KK or more then you have to expect failures of such things as starter motors , alternators, window lifts etc.

One of the good things about LRs , is the AULRO forum where there is advice on how to fix most things cheaply, and preventative maintenance is the key. EG did your mechanic replace the "hidden hose"? If not you should have it done, and change all the hoses for that matter.

Yeah, nah....(territory lingo)
The mechanic is wrong.
There is no shortfall in the cooling systems for the D2,
There are a few well documented issues a D2 can suffer, which should have been sorted in any well maintained vehicle , never to return again,
As for leaks etc it's caused by wear and tear then not maintaining the vehicle, it applies to all makes. That's why cars devalue and get cheaper over time and eventually end up on the tip.

I'd be concerned about the cause of oil light come on.

The T5 engine is Land Rover designed, originally called the Storm engine and was the only LR engine retained by BMW for any new products.

Mine is on 250K kms and it gets the worst from all, alternatively down to -25*C in the winter and up to +45*C by summer, took care of it the best i could, it's dry like a bone under it and runs like a dream, find a proper mechanic, IMO you was ripped off cos for that money it should at least not leak at all, gaskets and seals are cheap and for such labour cost IMO they should have replaced them all with gearbox off... these cars were sold on the South-African market too and i didnt hear such enormity that they can't bear the heat

Hey guys sorry for the late reply and thanks for all yours I'm still trying to figure out how to use forums sorry .. It has 170k on the clock .. I called the guy I bought it from today told him it broke down after 6 days and I got it towed to a recommended mechanic and he said (the dealer) well your problem isn't with me then .. I called the mechanic back told him the story he said he would take it off me drive it a few days and do up a car report on it for me .. Guys I spent every cent I had on this car .. Is there anyway back from it because this week the steering is gone very heavy and a few times iv put it into reverse and accelerate it doesn't move and the same with when I put it in drive .. (And no the handbrake isn't on &#128547 even if I could get my money back and buy one somewhere else because I feel really screwed over here paying out nearly over 8 grand in total and it's still sitting in the driveway ..
