Pull the inlet manifold off and give it a clean out.
Water pump, fan bearing, check your harmonic balancer, new thermostat and new hoses![]()
I am going to put a new radiator and Intercooler in my TD5 D2.
I am wondering If there are some other things I should be replacing or repairing while I have the front of the car apart and access is improved?
The vehicle is an 02 model and has 230 000 kays on it. As far as I know the water pump and fan bearing have never been done.
Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks Muppet. Will have to get the Rave disc out and have a look at the intake manifold removal.

If you replace the water pump, there is an o-ring between the engine block and the mounting bracket that the water pump and air con all mounts to. Also check the drive faces between the power steering pump and water pump. The water pump is driven off the power steering pump, and the coupling can flog out. If the drive on the water pump side is damaged then chances are the power steering pump side is also damaged. Plus check the power steering hoses, there is one which rubs against the engine block and can hole out.
I agree that if going to trouble to replace radiator and upgrade intercooler, the do the full cooling system including water pump, thermostat and all hoses including inter-cooler hoses. And while you are at it, check the drive belt tensioner as this is another bearing that can wear out. The more you remove, the easier it is to work on.
Amazing how much quieter the motor is when you replace all the noisy bearings hanging off the drive belt!

I have looked through my receipts and the water pump was done 2 years ago by my old mechanic so I'm not going to worry about that.
All the hoses have been ordered and should be here today or Monday. Allisport Intercooler should be here around the same time hopefully.
Fan bearing will be the difficult one i reckon. Have to go and get the fan spanners today.
Yeah I had a belt tensioner go last year on the side of the highway near toronto. Luckily my cousin lives nearby and could go to all4x4 and get a new belt and tensioner for me. Not a lot of fun to change in a breakdown bay on the side of a freeway.
Just have to order the provent now.

Urban panzer has a sensational article on doing the fan bearing on his website discovery2.co.uk
Of course he put it up about a week after I paid someone to do it for me
Sent from my HTC One using AULRO mobile app
Haha yeah I saw that. It's always the way.

Let us know what you think about the new intercooler when you fit it to the car
