RIP Bucko - Riding on Forever
Crank angle sensor. You can read the code with any obd2 dongle and software. For $20 you shouldn't be without one on a later car like his.

I had similar intermittent issues with aTD5. Turned out to be the engine immobiliser/fuel cutoff thing that is meant to trip in case of an accident. In my car it is on the back firewall, on the right as you are looking at the engine from the front, behind the turbo/exhaust manifold. There is a two wire plug that connects to it, and with the heat, it became brittle. I unplugged the cable, and shorted the plug with paper clip, and covered it with electrical tape. Someday I'll replace the sensor as well. You can check this by unplugging it and trying to start the engine. Should get the same symptoms. I found that once it was unplugged, I couldn't plug it back in due to its brittle nature though.
I had the same problems as you. Engine would suddenly die for no reason, after a while, would come good. Started happening once a week, and then several times a day before I sorted it. About Nov/Dec 2013 from memory - I would have posted something about it here.
Can't tell you if they also have these on V8s, but worth trying as its a cheap & easy fix away from home.
Yep , Pinelli that sounds like my issue mate ..
I have ordered a new crank angle sensor and will swap it out regardless , but I will check into that immobiliser thing now ....
I have no idea if these V8's have them ? I am sure one of the Gurus will chip back in and let us both know soon hopefully
I am not fully up with this newer V8 but trying to come to grips with her slowly .
Gee , I miss my old Diesel Rover !!

Yes,
The V8 also has the Sensor on the passenger side firewall, Its just a Black capped plunger. Make sure the connector at the base is in good nick. They can deteriorate & cause issues.
Also make sure all your Earths are tight & corrosion free at the battery Earth Terminal & the Earth points above the battery.
Make sure all your Positive connections are also clean & tight to the fuse box & all other connections.
Some of the D2's also had issues with the main engine fuse box circuit board cracking.
Cheers & Good Luck.
The sensor is ordered as mentioned above ....
but today , I thought that the first time she shut down and put me yet again to the side of the road , that I would try the water cooling on the crank sensor .... suggested by you great!! guys as a quick fix
Well bugger me , as soon as she stopped , I popped the bonnet and hit the sensor with my home made length of 20mm tube and a 1.25 lt of water
(old coke bottle) and hey , straight after drowning it , she fired up ... !!!wooohoo
Yes , in limp mode but she ran instantly
So , bottom line , seems the crank angle sensor is the first culprit to deal with in my case.
I cant thank all you guys enough ... She is my lone work vehicle and I am still running !!!
(ok with a few stops along the way till my new sensor turns up )
but hey ... thanks guys !!!
Steve .... (still on the road !!! )

Now prepare for the pain of replacing it, fiddly bugger. Note the spacer direction when you remove it. IIRC, remove the connector bracket to make it easier.
