Just wondering if there is a way of getting fault codes out of a disco? A mate of mine is chasing an answer to his v8 blowing black smoke.

Any cheap OBDII reader should fetch and clear the codes from the engine. But only the engine. The cheap readers will only give a code and not a description. But they are genetic and easy enough to Google.

But you want to clear the codes first and take it for a 15min drive. Then do another scan and see what has come up and start there.

That's cause you'll probably have a bunch of irrelevant codes on your first scan.

How much black smoke are we talking about? I would think if you are getting black smoke under hard acceleration I would think the engine is sitting in "open" fuelling which is like a safe default mode.

So if that's the case the problem is either the MAF, O2 sensors, Throttle position, Inlet air temp, Crank Position or coolant temp sensors.
