    Automatic Life

Disco 2 owners. How long have your auto gearboxes lasted. What seems to be the normal life expectancy?

Mine is at 220k km, it is behind at Td5.

I think mine will go for a while as it had a lot of country km in the first half of its life. I think most should do 250k km, I am sure you will get people saying they have experienced failures before 100k km and others that have go 500kkm.

Just ticked over 180,000km and fitted an ATF cooler today, and run TransmaxZ ....

... AND fitted a new XYZ switch as well (expensive little buggers!)

I'm optimistically expecting 250-300,000 ... With most of what's left towing 1.5t of Kamper.

240k rebuilt. Just to be niggly it decided to chew the pump housing face up, which as that is also the main box housing meant a new box housing also :/ Ah the joys!

Mine is up to 312000+ kms.
Car had 'almost' regular servicing since new. Make of that what ya will....
My theory is this (for what it's worth), Land Rover have been using this Gearbox/Transmission, almost from day one. Apart from some fancy electronics bolted to it these days, it's basically still the same good 'ol ZF
(choose your flavor), 4hp22/24 etc etc...........

(except in Freelander 1's, but don't start me on that)

Depends on how it is treated I bought mine with 160k on it and previous owner had trans replace because of his stupid daughter flooring the Disco with a horse trailer on it from stand still.

At 200,000 the oil pump gear went because previous owners stupid mechanic put the oil pump gear the wrong way around and it finally broke, 2 trans is less than 200,000 kms, as I said if their not treated well then what hope do they have.
    Cheers,
    Mario

Haven't you heard of the advertisements for Freelander 1's being sold, converted to front wheel drive for economy ( yep its the wallet economy, don't get it fixed and you get wallet economy)

    Thumbs up

I've got 235,000 on mine with a 4.6 conversion and it still feels strong. Shift quality isn't what it was years ago but nothing to worry about. I service it every 30,000 and use full synthetic Nulon Multi-vehicle ATF. It complies with the ZF Lifeguard 5 & 6 fluids that my XJ8 Jaguar needs so I thought it would be good for the ZF in the Disco, and it has been.

I use it for all of my cars and for the power steering and ACE fluids as well.

One thing though when I put it in my XJ6 Jag with a BW65 and a cork gasket on the pan it soaked into the cork and leaked through. Not much of problem just replaced the cork gasket with a fibre one.
