A good point - hadn't thought about thatto be honest.

It would have to go in the back of the car with 4 people and all of the gear required for going away for 2 weeks. Don't know that I would physically have room.

    The hits keep on coming!

The oil out of the transfer case looks like metallic paint. So that is grinding itself to pieces too.

Just out of curiosity, how long would it take to get like that? The auto was rebuilt 8000ks ago, and they didn't mention any issues with it at that point - would it likely have been on the way out then?

Well, have a bottle of the oil as a memento.

It is gray, and looks like metallic paint... so hard to say. But the poor thing was chewing itself to bits. But all is good now, and the thing is going like a train again.

I'm wondering what to do about my auto. I'd only done a few thousand after a full recondition when the lines blew, and while it's driving, I'm worried what will happen when I go to tow the van next time.

How simple would it be to replace the auto with a manual? I know going the other way is tricky. Would the ECU miss the auto box and misbehave? Would the transfer case mount directly on to the manual?

Edit: Always search the forum first http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...ery-2-td5.html

    Dont fret too much...

I've had similar come out of a TC and refilled it with good stuff and it went at least another 60,000 without issue before I sold the vehicle it was still going strong when I spoke to the owner...

It is worth just refilling it and seeing how you go - at worst its the cost of the oil...

Replaced the transfer case at the recommendation of TRS. All has been good so far.
