yes i hear you. The diesel does drive very differently and this being my first Ive had to adjust. The torque on the diesel is amazing, turbo kick took a while to get used to. Fuel economy is special. All in all I cant believe i didnt change years ago

    Sorry brother, Ive defected.

Hang on...we're talking fuel economy here....my Td5 returned 13l/100km towing (combined touring/towing) our 23ft van 4500 km around Victoria. Oh yeah, I look foward to every drive.......

Mine returns about 9l/100k on level highway cruising at 100. Tends to return about 11 if there are hills or if you oush on at 110 - aerodynamics catch up at that soeedI guess.

To those with remaps/chips - apart from being able to carry speed up hills, does it also improve economy on hilly roads?

I have just done the figures on my 4.6 manual D2. 31 inch AT's; 100kg of LPG gear in the rear; TJM front bar, Fridge, APT sliders, roof rack (2 up people usually) etc etc etc and using it for city work in and out from the western suburbs in a combination of bumper to bumper peak hour and 50k of highway running I returned 15.4 litres per 100k...or per the raw figures 86 litre of petrol and returning 557klm...not bad although I was driving for economy and using the torque keeping the revs low. Gives a theroetical max range of over 600klm but obviously you wouldnt let it get lower than about 9 litres left in the tank.

Funnily enough its brick like shape and lift means on the highway at 105 it is not doing too much better than about 14 - 14.5 l per 100k either~! Having said that 90kph saves a bit - about 1 litre per 100k from memory.

    Cheers

PS. Pedro Im not sure I will bother Mark's doorstep for a re-tune ECU given those figures...

Many thanks for the responses, and very interesting. So next question is....

Baring over-use of the right boot, what are the major factors would be causing such differences between TD5's. Initial thoughts are manual / auto, but is there anything of a mechanical nature that can be looked at and improved ?

    What HE said ^^^

    ... and ...

Road speed. 90kmhr or less (not really aerodynamic). You're pushing a block of flats into the breeze

Lift. More lift, more drag under the vehicle.

    Weight, weight, weight.

I have a stock standard manual Td5 with 270000 on the clock, I get 10.28 litres per 100km, so about 925 kms on a tank assuming 90 litres per tank. This is suburban driving, to work and back round trip of about 20kms, speed limits from 40 to 70.

    Cheers
