You're right. It just snaps into place.
If it doesn't snap back into place the plastic adapter is probably broken but they only cost about $5-10 to replace so not a big deal.
There are a few Youtube videos on how to replace the mirror. It's fairly straightforward.

Mirror housing etc is fine - it swivelled and wasn't damaged
Heating connectors saved glass from being smashed as it just dangled
