    Welcome Stuart.
There is a number of ways it could be done.
    2 at short notice...
    1-
Find a normally closed relay and fit it on the acc wire of the radio.
Use a reverse feed to activate the relay thus opening the contacts when in reverse cutting power to the radio.
    2-
Reach across and turn it off or down, like I do of a night in the truck(lorry).
    Cheers, Kyle

Some phone kits mute the speakers, have a look at a phone shop, something they have might be easily adapted. "Parrot" is a brand name that seems to come up in this area.

My FPV F6 does this when the reverse camera activates and I for don't like it. I will be listening to cactus Island in the morning and then silence. My alpine system in the D3 the camera will activate but all other functions will continue.

I rigged-up an auto radio mute on my D2 by using power from the reverse lights to drive an NPN Darlington transistor whose o/p was connected to the audio mute wire in the radio's phone connector. Not quite so necessary with reverse sensors and cameras of later vehicles although I had also fitted a reversing camera to the D2. I now press the RRV's mute button if I think of it before the reverse camera takes over the screen and have always wound down the window enough to hear any shouts.

Edit: For non-electronics people, a relay operated by the reverse light power that connects the audio mute to ground is probably the simplest method.

    G'day,
As per this link on a quick search...

    https://www.google.com.au/search?cli...zj6agm1hdZM%3A
Pin 30- radio acc feed(harness side)
Pin 87- radio acc wire (radio side)
    Pin 85- earth
    Pin 86- reverse power feed.

If you can't get a normily closed relay look for a change over relay.
