    Thanks Pedro
I will phone the local dealer(something I generally try to avoid). I have previously read the post you suggested but buying HR separately is a bit costly
Do you think the standard hitch will handle a wdh ok. I have a coil set up and tow an off road camper van weighing about 1800 kg. The way it is now it really pulls the back of the disco down even with air bags in the springs.

Have you considered rectifying the problem that is necesitating thr use of a WDH Kit?
ie. Rebalance the trailer by either changing position of load or repositioning the axle - more expensive but better in the long run.

Despite the current tthinking that towball weight should be 10% of trailer weight, I've always worked on a towball weight of about 50kg and have never had a problem with any of my trailers.

Funny you should say that. I'm of a similar mind but with perhaps a little more towball weight for heavier loads. Generally have found this much more comfortable driving provided of course tow vehicle is also properly balanced (sometimes the forgotten part of the equation).

    Hi Roger
I can't change the axle on the thing. Its an American built Getabout with a large platform out the front to fit a 4 wheeler. I don't have a 4 wheeler but soon find ways of filling it up.I am not an experienced tow hauler hence all the questions. I am going to take it to some fairly wild country and need to have weight on the platform (120 litres water plus two extra spares plus toolbox). The platform is rated at 200kg but I suppose in the US They are towed by F series trucks or similar. My main issue is whether the standard tow hitch can handle a wdh in tough going.I have water tanks underneath but need the extra as we will be in dry areas for up to a month at a time.It actually tows ok, as is,apart from the brakes not liking the lack of weight over the front axle

Sounds like an 'interesting' trailer. Do you have any photos of it that you could post?

hmm, I read that its normal to unstrain WDH's on rough terrain,,
and no, LR only reccomend WDH's with very specific LR components.

Have you weighbridged it loaded? fronts only? car only? total?
really only way to be sure

    At least try this
How to measure your caravan tow ball weight - Hardings Swift Caravan Services

or buy one of those tow ball weight weighing machines like this TOW Ball Weight Scales Trojan Caravan Safe Tongue Towball Trailer 4WD TOW | eBay
    as a starter.
Not promoting any particular brand, just indicating the sort of stuff that is readily available and cheap insurance. Cheers

    Hi Roger
I'm afraid my limited computer skills don't stretch as far as posting a photo. If you google getabout saturn s2 you will find plenty of pictures. Melbourne RVs have plenty of info. The early ones were imported and modified to suit au. from 2009 they were factory built for Australia. I will do what is suggested and when it stops raining I will take weights and see what I come up with.

    John
