TD5: Cleaning MAF Inlet Gauze of talc-like dust

    Hi all,

Any suggestions on how to remove this talc-like dust from the MAF gauze?

The gauze is quite fragile and the dust is quite sticky.

I was thinking I would vacuum it, but I thought I would see if there were any other suggestions.

And yes I am planning on getting a snorkel!

    Cheers,

    Mark

You can get proper MAF cleaner http://m.supercheapauto.com.au/Produ...er-300g/157339

Remove the MAF from the car and spray, make sure the ignition has been off for at least 15 minutes to let the MAF cool down before spraying though.

You need a proper Land rover air filter more than a snorkel.
If I had that much grit going into my engine I would be REALLY worried

I wouldn't be posting here if I was not concerned.

This was the first time I have serviced this car myself so I was not aware of the state of the MAF gauze and the entire airbox for that matter.

I have been running Coopers-Fiamm filters, which I had thought were OEM - I will get genuine from now on.

Nonetheless from reading previous posts here there seems to be a consensus that the airbox is not so great and tends to let in dust past the filter and that getting fresh air from where it does (esp if a bullbar has been fitted) is problematic - hence my plan to get a snorkel.

I second that and add - allow some time for it to completely dry before refitting and starting car.

I give mine a spray with each service - better that waiting for it to malfunction before cleaning.

There is nothing wrong with Coopers-Fiamm air filters. I've been using them for quite a while. However the D2 has a crap air inlet system and the filters need changing regularly. Also make sure the filter seal is fitted properly. From your picture it looks like the maf sensor hasn't been touched in a long while.

Contact cleaner can also be used, however make sure the sensor is dead stone cold before cleaning, as the sensor wire is very fragile. I would let the car sit overnight before cleaning.

    Cheers

When I replace my air filter element I smear lithium grease completely around the rubber seal on the filter and in the channel.
My MAF was perfectly clean even after the GRR.

Does Nanocom airflow reading of 4.4 after shutdown mean the MAF is busted?

Weirdly, airflow seems right at idle and 4000rpm.

    Anyone else had this happen?

No , it's normal , it should read 50-60 at idle and 600+ over 4000, if it reads 4.4 when running there's a problem, usually stuffed maf.

Did you know there is supposed to be an large O ring on the MAF inlet to Filter box? not on your picture. There are many Disco 2s driving around with out it, lost over the years, so there is no seal into the filter housing.
