Have an Intermittent cooling problem Viscous fan blade has seemingly good tension when cold but free wheeling at operating temp.....is this the way it should be.....any suggestions greatfully received.....have cleaned radiator, Intercooler and trans oil cooler, appears to be no ex gasses in radiatoe and no water leaks

All viscous fans will have resistance when cold as the fluid pools in the bottom overnight, hence the loud noise on startup or resistance when you turn a cold fan.Have an Intermittent cooling problem Viscous fan blade has seemingly good tension when cold but free wheeling at operating temp
They are designed to free wheel below the set temperature that the coil spring on the front controls by closing an orifice inside, and when that temp is reached you will hear the fan cut in and feel a loss of power. AFAIK the fan on my D2 TD5 cuts in at about 94C. So maybe blanket your radiator and go for a short drive.
Unless it has been cleaned, a good test is to see if there is staining from leaking fluid in the front or rear of the fan hub or of course the blades are loose.
