    Waste Gate Actuator

I have a been checking a few things due to excessive fuel consumption - I removed the waste gate actuator and it is really hard to get it to move. How easy/hard should it be to pull on the shaft and get it to move outward?

I had to use all my strength to pull it out 1 or 2 mm with the spring action pulling it back in. I had to use a screw driver to pry against the spring action to remove it from the waste gate lever. This seems like the spring action is too hard to me, it would need a huge amount of pressure from the control valve to make it operate.

The spring action pulls it away from the firewall is this correct?

Is the waste gate control valve supposed to provide vacuum or pressure to the actuator? (that's a stupid question I know but I just want to make sure I understand correctly)

The waste gate lever seems to turn freely.

Any help would be appreciated - thanks

The spring is quite hard don't be surprised, the rod is pushed forward by the diaphragm on boost pressure coming from the intercooler through the modulator which bypasses the pressure at low revs and opens as the boost increases managed by the ECM, when the turbo is in action the boost is helping too to open the waste gate so the spring is exposed to double action, direct boost against the waste gate port within the turbo and the pressure coming from intercooler through the actuator valve.... too light spring would let boost leak through the wastegate...the description in RAVE is wrong in this particular area(too)

when you say "forward" you mean toward the firewall - correct?

    actuator not moving at all

I just finished putting the turbo back on after fitting an EGT (pre turbo) and decat pipe. I had a closer look at the operation of my waste gate and the actuator is not moving at all when I get someone to rev the engine up to a bit over 3000 rpm. I pretty sure this should be moving right?

Yes it should move a bit if you rev it up to 3000rpm

Only under load will it move , free revving probably not , try compressed air , remembering you only need 15 - 20 psi depending on how short you have the rod

Won't see any movement while free revving.
