You may be right there. I admit that I am quite fond of the old girl. The other consideration is that we rarely use it for anything other than taking the dogs to the beach, a return trip of 2km.. Does not do much for fuel consumption and 2 lots of QLD rego and insurance are a pensioners burden. 🍺

    Replaced front discs and pads.
Had been getting severe shudder on braking.
Couldn't see anything untoward on the parts I took off but seems to be better once we put the new RDA matt black discs - very appropriate for Melbourne!
Saw that the fix to the radiator overflow spigot was breaking down... job for next week or whenever I can get a new radiator delivered.

    Hoses all tight and secure..

Simple little job to replace the leaking coolant hose I cobbled up from the radiator to front rail when relocating the EWP. Got it out and measured it, cut the Magna hose and back in, not a drop out of it now. The EWP is a bonus in this situation, manually put it on and it pulses slowly and after 5 minutes, no more bubbles.

Also replaced the drive belt damaged when the intercooler pipe blew off and gouged it badly. No more rattles from the tensioner.

Hour and a half of peak hour traffic and more confidence in the cooling system, EWPC barely getting to 95C and rarely putting on the fan. Out with the 4WD mates, planning a week long trip to Robe and watching their last trip, talking it up and being reminded, the Disco better not put a foot wrong

The whole return trip home in just 45 minutes and the fan did not come on at all with the temps sitting at 90C most of the way.

A little more boost and now hitting just above 26psi, pleased to to see the EGT kept further in check and hooning just a bit, really good to get a couple of tonne Land Rover lifting its skirts and touching the rev limiter. This was just testing the cooling system, who am I kidding, it was for fun!!

So for tomorrow, ready for a trip to Moe tomorrow and some 4wd tracks and finally put proper dirt under its wheels for the first time.

Noticed this today on an oil change, looks like its leaking around the rear exhaust housing, any one had this before on any turbo? Maybe just need to do up the housing bolts ? Not that I have ever undone them.

    Turbos not very old.

Love working on this motor but, so much room!

    Failures and Smiles

Had a day out, in the Latrobe Forest today.

Failure first, catastrophic shaft break in the power steering pump, auxiliary belt on fire, smoke in the cabin and EWPC spikes to 117C, and when I pulled off the side of the road, got a flat tyre. Oh and had, the Yellow Ace light come on, 10-03 Road Speed Signal Missing in ACE fault show on Nanocom after a stick got lodged under the D2. Then only took 5 hours to get home. 4x4Club insurance would only tow me to the nearest repair facility, never mind it was Saturday at just after 4 and was 75K's from home... Lucky I had RACV extras I say.

The Smiles, my first hit out with the D2 and it seems the D1 is just a memory somewhat but the D2 is fantastic, just need it to lock up earlier for a bit more control and noise reduction. The comfort on the tracks, and I was not taking it easy, was superb. If there was a deep trench, I went in it (save for two chasms). A couple of 'rock ledges' which I thought might be on the edge were done as well.

Finally dirt to be proud off. the tyre going down not so much.

So to the performance of the cooling system.

The Nanocom Log readings of TD5 coolant readings were only lasting around 10 minutes before going south. The new sensor was not picked up last week so this will be rectified. The EWPC was showing between 90-95 for all of the day until the end when I was booting it around the gravel tracks maxing out at 105C and coming down again. This was repetitive short blast of more than half throttle between the bends, throttle modulated and blast again. It surprised me after the rest of the day and the resolute adherence to the 95C max when 4WDing, this as well in M mode and long times on the throttle up the hills etc.

The highest reading I got on the Nanocom and have not gone over the 7 logs I am pretty sure was 92C (matching the EWPC) but again when was working stuck around the mid 80C's.

Couple of points here, the working range of temperature was only 15C, I do not regard this as an incredible margin of temps. Sure the fan was on more than in regular driving but driving in low range 1st 2nd and 3rd I had anticipated higher temps at least then. No the highest temps were holding speeds in the 40's and 50's on the bends up the hills and even then at 105C, I am not worried by this now. Pretty sure when the Nanocom is reading the mid 90's they are having the fluid temp over 100C and it's not even at boiling temp in the system.

Sure could have higher temps in future than today down here in Melbourne but I have not included the AirCon fan into the equation yet which I am more than confident now will bring temperatures down where the variation of 15C will be down to 10C. My confidence in the system as it stands now is around 70% that it is effective, include the ACF and I am thinking it will be well in the 90's.

Pre the failure, of what was a second hand power steering pump, it was about 4 - 5 ks of the most wonderful windy road heading up to the Mt Baw Baw tourist Road, being held up by the BIL's Ranger, accelerating hard and joyously to the next bend (temps maxing at 105C). Who thought you could have so much fun in a Land Rover Discovery 2, don't think a Mazda MX5 would have better fun on this road. Turning onto Baw Baw Tourist and different sound started, about 150M of listening to what was that and the smoke started coming in the cabin and out the bonnet and alternator light came on.

Ohh the spike of 117C you ask, sure I was glossing over it. Well lets just say when you put a fire directly under the Temp Sensor it will probably rise and quickly. Superman Arms and Right Foot to steer and brake and all of a sudden the Temp alarm goes off and it is showing 117C in a few seconds, smoke everywhere, thoughts of disaster were in my head at that moment I tell you.

No leaks on either , 1 about 18 months old , other about 6 months. Have you tried nipping them up?

Thanks for looking, for me to see it i had to look at the turbo from the left side down though the gap above the centrifugal filter, stuffed the camera down there. The passenger side seems clear. Got half way to pulling the turbo off yesterday, will leave it to next weekend.

I see you have a manual boost controller on one of them, what PSI did you take it up to ? I was told no benefit going any more boost than what they come set at.
