    Head

As you know its also rebuilding the new head also. You've got some cool stuff going in!
Thank god for Covid is all I can say then!!

Have had to take some 'enforced' holidays due to the lockdown and this has given me time to do the project that I started buying and planning for 18 months ago, seeing pictures of the head replacement and a couple of videos never gives an accurate time frame for such a job as to the head replacement for non professional mechanics. This will be the first head I have done (with assistance from talented BIL), always left that work to others - had never intended to touch brakes either but that one has been ticked off too in the last year.

The other advantage of the long lead time is the space to think and weigh up the risks / gambles of the unknown parts of the build. Knowing that I will be lucky to drive the D2 5,000K's a year but a fair % of those will be hard hard k's putting the vehicle at the design limits, not talking extreme 4WD, but any track can be difficult especially with weather and excess traffic (like those beastly patrols running 37's).

Things such as the, auto TC, axles and diffs etc. are to me a given from the wealth of knowledge available especially here on Aulro as well as other sites dedicated to the D2, they really do get under your skin. Do regret selling my TDi and the new owner loves it probably even more than me. Had always planned to just keep it stock as possible, not so the D2.

The one that has the most risk for me is going Davies Craig electric water pump and electric fan. Removing the existing water pump and welding it watertight then installing electric pump and 16" fan. Went with the largest pump available - EWP150 - has the greatest benefit in that if and I mean IF the temp gets high, turning the engine off, the pump AND fan will keep working and removing heat soak from the engine. The controller for the unit also sets the temp and alarms if the temps get high anyway. Essentially in high risk situations such as long climbs the pump and fan can be set essentially for maximum running at low engine speeds, this I like.

Cooling has too parts, airflow AND waterflow and being able to regulate both is where I see the ability to run a electric fan against the wisdom of running one here in Aus if I was using the stock water pump with one. Keeping the existing belts due to the rather unique TD5 system of running it as an auxiliary was also helpful as not having to source a belt to fit when a water pump in a lesser vehicle is removed.

    Because I can (sic)

The console in the D2 was looking a bit tardy so decided to paint it black! Actually got the paint for the top of the Instrument binnacle but rather than sitting with 9/10ths of a can wasted... Was only going to do the upper armrest but that didn't use enough, actually it didn't look that good on the tardy grey underneath

Wash down with the P21S to get rid of any issues of grease etc. This stuff is fantastic, great for the engine bay too

I’m just impressed that you have a centre console that appears to be in very good nick and unbroken no cracks😱

There is ONE, just where the upper corner of the window control switches are, pretty minor and out of the way though

    20210919_122654.jpg

Am going to weld with the soldering iron and a bit of wire mesh as I have done on the underside of the instrument binnacle (just waiting on some epoxy to smother the rest of the wire mesh for total strength) and then to bolt the gauge holder down and paint.

I wouldn't have said "proudly", I'd have said "smugly" as in "it took 14,500 km's but I got you in the end"... It thought it had me in SA when, at a roadside weigh-in and inspection, a non working left rear indicator was found. Unroadworthyness was threatened until I changed the bulb while I was waiting to be weighed. It thought it had me again when the dreaded double cardan joint decided to break the ball part. This time though, it finally got a truck ride...

Looks very flash, what paint did you use?

On my disco finally got it all mostly sorted and drving after swapping out the transfer case. The CDL linkage is still disconnected as I couldn't figure out how the cable should run without being too stiff to move, it's not helped by the bracket on the t/c being a home job of dubious quality. Gonna buy a factory bracket but does anyone have a good picture from underneath showing how the cable should be run?

RE the paint, got it from Supercheap and it is Duplicolour Vinyl and Fabric, reading up on it and the preparation is important to rid of any previously product but it is easy to apply!

    Supercheap Auto Australia

Re the Cable, having just done the same job a couple of weeks ago, the cable is difficult to manage to get it to fit and a second set of hands is helpful with the panel to get it back into place. It required all sorts of contorting the cable to get it into a position to fit the panel.

A couple of pages back there should be pictures of what I used to get the panel to fit, a wrecking bar poked into the auto trans cable and leveraged against the side of the tunnel. The suggestion given post which was a great one was to use bolts rather than to re rivet the panel especially if you don't have a strong enough rivet tool The bolt would not require you to be so perfect with the alignment as to get it to sit flush when riveting.

For reference we used this type

    gun (pop riviet) (300 x 225).jpg

with the ones under the dash a bit of a struggle.

    Good luck

Thanks for the advice, the rivet's definitely were a questionable decision. I ended up using rivnuts so it's all pretty simple to pull off now (seriously recommend getting one even a cheapie cos they're bloody handy). Where I was having the issue is while I could brute force the cable around and into the bracket on the T/C it's at a really bad angle and it's super hard to move it in/out of diff lock.

I made successful crack repairs on my old D2s console by roughing up the inside a then smearing that 2 part fibre glass repair bog that has fibreglass strands mixed through it
