It will require some modding but am looking now at something similar to how they show it with the Navara but imbedding a 4" pipe along the panel. It will probably require a relocation of the bonnet alarm or at least mod of the attachment but at the moment seems the most expedient solution short of a complete makeup of a unit. That area added to the area of the snorkle entry provides quite an increase in air availability.

Why not just drill a hole in the front of the airbox down low on the RH side with a similar hole in the radiator support and make an inlet pipe from a reducer pipe. That Is what i did and seems to work well. I have been through heavy rain with no distortion of the filter and in any case I have made a plug for wading.

Liked your mod, really clever I thought and with the basically unmodified D2a I am going to look at it, however for my heavy duty 4WD the D2, the airbox needs more. The sealing with just two clips which could I suppose be improved with some form of foam or silicon taping, but it would still be marginal. On the Easter trip found that the on track mod to shorten the turbo intake hose (which split right at the turbo) has actually caused a rupture on the underside of the airbox as well so need a new airbox anyway.

The red silicon hose by the way is just the return from the Boost Controller, it did make a fair bit of noise left open in the cabin.

Also want a snorkel which I feel the Safari one is still going to be marginal - much better I might add than the $100 ebay jobbie I wasted my money on 18 months ago, the later safari snorkels for say the Ford Ranger are quite large when compared with the D2 one. Up the Vic High Country there are a lot of water crossings and on the second last trip had the instance of water over the bonnet unexpectedly, was marginally off the line of the person before and this did lead to a bit of stress as to hydro locking.

Whilst it may be convenient for replacements out in the country or local stores, do not see an issue carrying a couple of filters anyway, not much space or weight in these. The fact you have to undo 12 or screws is a pain though.

This is what a local shop MoonLight 4wd came up with, they sell the universal filter housing on its own, it houses a pod inside.

It's still 4 " inlet near the fender just oval shape with a bend. I might take your idea of moving the bonnet alarm and go direct for less aggressive bend if it works out.

The VGT spooled way faster and than factory and way bigger low down torque kick.

That looks good. What sort of price did they charge to do the full job?

    What sort of Pod?

If it’s Pleated fabric that’s a big pass!

I did this on my D1 for the Supercharger, used an EBGT filter…

I might make something similar when I’m doing the finishing touches on the D2

Sweet looking rig by the way, and, Clean! Interested in the fact you mention the spooling as being better, what psi are your running with this?

That is essentially what I am looking to do with the 4" piping embedded in the wing. The idea as to the air box and having had a conversation about it with the BIL is that the pipe into the engine bay will be a 30' bend coming into the engine bay starting just before the PS and ACE reservoir and silicon reducing from the 4" down to the 3.5" of the airbox. The bend up to the inlet at 45' and the measurement of length of pipe is around 1.8 - 1.9 metres only. Safari 4" heads with the drip feature are a nice addition I feel to the system

Safari 4x4 Air Ram 4 Snorkel Head - New Style (Without Removable Grill) - 4x4 Down Under

Had a look at the Moonlight site, that airbox is not on there by the way, which I had seen before but choked on the prices for their systems, the GU Patrol option is around $350 with pipes and silicon to add of course. One of the points I noted about the GU airbox was the access to the filter, the twin flip on this is good!! how is the sealing around the edges and piano hinge??

Therefore what we are looking at is a slightly shorter pipe on the outside than yours where the inside of your bend would be the outside of mine. As I am seeing it, the orientation of the GU option is fully customizable and can orientate the cannister a bit more freely to face the snorkel pipe as well as some leeway in positioning in the space. Our goal is to actually run the pipe through the current hole area, hoping that the edge of the 4" pipe would be at the back edge of the ovaloid cutout so to speak.

One of the advantages of the GU is that the choice of filters, as Tombie notes, is not compromised, you want K&N YOU CAN HAVE IT, I don't, you want Foam, Paper or as for the big pass Pleated Fabric, you can still have it.

I am off to check one out today in the flesh.

By the way, how did you attach the pipe to the bodywork and did you this along the pipe or just at the engine end and A pillar?

I got my air box done with 4inch intake so no restrictions and the Alive GTB550 Turbo absolutely loves it and with the ITG pod filter, its filters way better than K&N who have destroyed 2 expensive turbo compressor wheels

Love this one, being able to SEE the dust accumulation a definite bonus. Have you repositioned the PS Reservoir? Can not see it there. It also looks like you could fit an ARB Twin Compressor between the Air Box and radiator support, now that would be cool!!

Have you changed the turn through into the engine bay since I saw it, thought you had a multi joint turnaround

EDIT Just noticed, you HAVE removed the bonnet alarm pin

Yeah I moved the steering reservoir and I have a twin ARB compressor at the firewall

Too much I was looking for a quick fix with out putting the effort in and ultimately was not happy with the final job mainly around dealing with the inlet from the fender, the exit side is great. A lesson I should already know by now if you want it done right do it your self... lol. I had gone down the path of researching the GU airbox and that's what I was going to mess with if DIY'ing, or an off shelf GU product as a base, should have.

This is what they gave with the airbox AF2711-2590 - 4" CLAMP-ON TAPERED FILTER (aeroflowperformance.com) I also have a uni pre filter to use on dusty tracks.

I have had the whole front end underwater with out any ingress, it was a trial by fire as I was not expecting such deep water. I wanted to pull the airbox out and do a on bench seal test before doing any thing sketch. Lucky it was ok. I was behind a few cars on dusty dry tracks with out the pre filter and when I took the pod off to inspect the clean side I could not detect any dust making it past.

I will get you some detailed pics of the attachment on the weekend/inside the fender when I can get back to the farm, in iso for the vid at the moment lol. Its attached at pillar + along the fender at the bottom side.
