Did you buy it 2nd hand?

I've fitted a few over the years, the only time I had one give any trouble, Ryan at T.T. sent a new one with fitting kit straight away, so no complaints here.

I have also been running them in both my own Auto and Manual D2's for years without any dramas.

Double the boost?, mine are around 26 PSI.... 52 PSI is a whole lot of wasted heat, not to mention the HP losses in just driving the turbine.
got one second hand and brand brand new didn’t like how the power curve was down low,

close to double 46psi of boost on a turbo that’s designed for that

Vnts for the common purpose are fine but my needs it doesn’t work well for daily disco

The GBC17 turbo will flow 26 lb/min without destroying itself.

The stock GT2052 (not the LR one) will flow 24.

Garrett suggest the GBC17 turbo can do 250 crank HP on a petrol engine, that's a pretty good conservative figure.

On a diesel engine it will possibly do about 195 HP, as diesels require a lot more air for the same HP.

For reference the GT2052 should do about 180 - again not the TD5 version.

The GBC17 looks to be less laggy.

Bear in mind this is the limit of these turbos, you would really want a bigger turbo to run sustained at those levels.. At least I would.

I haven't run any other figures like turbine drive pressure or pressure ratio which is obviously the issue on a 2.5 litre motor.

On every turbo, as pressure ratio increases, flow decreases.

That's why small diesels are hard to turbocharge for big horsepower and no lag.

Thanks for this Kaaaiku and Shack, thats interesting and really geeky at the same time!

I thought you had said Kaaaiju that you hadn't found the VNT ones (I'm assuming like the GTB450/550) to be reliable, and I need it to be reliable.

Shack I think also that with the auto it wont take big torque or HP without going into limp mode in the auto which is a bit annoying, but that body of torque from that turbo would be really welcome.

I'm following pretty keenly and with a lot of interest the 8HP installation by RRT which would be a solution to this.

Hmmm, I still have that M57TT/6HP in the garage, but it still needs more fitting solutions.....
    Cheers

Does your Auto go into limp mode now?

As for geeky.. You can't have reliable tech info without a bit of geekiness.

I've tuned a lot of VGT/VNT turbos and never come across reliability problems myself.

The biggest issue I do get with them is lack of airflow after about 2600 RPM.

This is the way they are set up from the supplier, there are ways around it but not sure how THAT will affect lifespan.

    Very nice to drive though..

The geeky is a great thing!
The auto doesn’t go into limp mode now. In previous editions of the ECU upgrade it used to, but its a milder setup now and is backed off a bit from what it once was.
That’s reassuring about the turbos as the GTB450/550 for example are off the shelf from the guy who services my Disco and is an easy one. Thanks for this.

I Have the GTB 550 vgt on my white d2a from Alive and that’s amazing but the cost was $7k plus another $15k to get the supporting mods so not cheap but alive have their tune on it as they know best how to get the power

my other disco I am experimenting with GBC 20 turbo and running as much boost as the td5 can hold onto as I have 6 spare bottom ends at home so might as well

Vnt do need to be setup up 100% correct to get them to work which you need a really good turner to do

What fitting solutions are you looking for? House of torque have a dash controller available.

Max has been really good there. I can just about get everything needed from radiator packs, harnesses, Disco2 integration controller, PAS lines etc.

The notable things I need to resolve are:

How to make an A/C pump fit as it clashes with the steering box
How to fit an ACE pump. Max Wiseman is also keen to do this, the thinking at the moment is to try to fit the ACE pump in place of the PAS pump (not sure yet if thats possible) and then run an electric PAS pump.
I suspect the twin turbo setup will make it tricky also with regards to engine mounts and fit of the line from the turbo to the intercooler

I'm hoping to buy a cheap Td5 auto and do a fit up on that.

To be honest I'm wondering if it would be easier just to fit it to the blue ute which would be far more straight forward.
    Cheers

Slunnie. Let’s have a chat later on a TD5 auto, I have potentially got something What happened to your Discovery 2 today?
