    D2 Tyres - 235 or 265?

I've bought my 1st Landrover, and the tyres are nearly at the end of their life. The nice people at LR Automotive in Melbourne have told me that 265 75 16 will fit with no alterations to my standard D2 (do have a bullbar). I do believe them, but I'm just interested to hear from others that have done this. How is the handling and fuel economy now? Have there been any issues.

When I bought this rig it had 285 55 22's on it. Looked magic but handled really bad. A local Landrover mechanic was surprised that I hadn't crashed it yet! They came off and the standard 16" went back on.

    Hi John,

If it's any help I went from the standard 235 to 255 70 16 but I did change from 7J to 8J rims at the same time and it works very well, but there is now about a 5% under read on the speedo. Not really a problem as I use a GPS.

I went from 235/75/16 to 265/75/16 cooper STT's. Probably upped my usage by 2l per 100km. No rubbing or anything like that and car drives fine. Speedo is 10% out (ie speedo shows 90km actual speed is 100km).

225/70/16 was stock from memory. I have had 245/70/16 but prefer 235/75/16. Great size I reckon.

The further you go from stock,, 235/70, the slower it will go. There are a lot more tyres available at the 75 sidewall size,,

Sorry yes 235 wide. I had 265/70/16 at one point and prefer narrower than that but still wider than stock but higher profile hence 235/75. That size tracks and steers better too. Cheers

Interesting about the fuel increase. I've just been looking at the fuel economy figures for when I had the 22" tyres on (speedo was 10% out so they must be the same circumference as the 265 75 16's) in comparison to using the 235 70 16. I think there's only a 1lt/100km difference. About 13.2-13.5lt/100km to around 12.5-13.2lt/100km now. But it's newly bought so I don't know if the previous owner used injector cleaner. Going to run through a couple of bottles to see if it makes a difference.

Thanks Northiam. According to the Nokian website, the closest dealer is 657.59km away!

Just be careful, the spare may not fit on the spare carrier as it is bigger. You may need to invert the wheel carrier or get an adapter.
