Thread: Help with roof racks/basket

I used the Rhino RL210 legs x6 and HD bars. I re-radiused the inside of the two rearward legs so they hug the roof profile, and used 2x 10mm spacers ontop of the legs. The rear bar sits <19mm off the roof, the centre bar sits _just_ behind the back end of the roof rails. I then fitted a 2m Rhino tray.

3 x HD bars & legs maybe 12kg
1 x tray approx 22kg
1 x fowxing on LHS of bars 23kg
1 x Oztent RV-5 22kg
1 x Oztent walls, front, fly 10kg
3 x butch camp chairs 12kg
1 x canvas bag with air beds, sleeping bags, blankets, etc 20kg
All the fasteners, bolts, spacers, brackets etc 5kg+
1 x chainsaw box (with oils/fuels/chains,etc) 13kg

.... that's an approximate weight of 140kg ... loaded goods, rack system & awning.

Never had any issues ... no extreme offroad with that load uptop, so if you deduct a few of my items and add a 35kg canoe/kyak I think you'd be OK. The D2 roof rails take zero load in my setup.

That's one pretty kick a$$ setup. Exactly what I'm looking for. You've given me faith after spending half the day talking to people that either didn't want to help, or due to lack of knowledge, couldn't. Have you got some rough prices for that setup? I think he means he shaved the inside of the legs to fit the shape of the roof better.

I'm using the taller Rhino Rack RL280 legs, these sit 70mm higher than the RL210 but require no 'shaving'. Then a Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform. The platform doesn't require any cross bars as the legs bolt direct to the platform.

Just rough from memory ...

3 x HD bars & legs - Used from Roofrack City in Sydney $350 odd (bars were too wide and had to cut them down ... nice for a custom fitup.
1 x tray $500 used (came with 3x narrower HD bars + mounts/spacers t/s Nissan Patrol - kept tray have bars to sell)
1 x fowxing 1 x RV-5 Oztent 1 x Oztent side walls, front (used), RV-5 fly maybe $2600
Foxwing Mounting kit (for end of bar mounting, not ontop mounting) 2x sets maybe $140 incl a few extras.

Not cheap but worth every penny imho.

I added a side wall for the foxwing so if it's just me out, it's a c-gear mat along the passengers side, swag under the foxwing, with a side wall fitted ....

No, standard height RL210 legs needed two 10mm spacers to raise the bars a little higher, then the back of the legs need to be taken to with a 4" angle grinder to put more curve into the profile so they'll hug the roofline ...

This is a non-modified RL210 leg (front crossbar)




... and this is a modified RL210 leg (middle & back crossbars)






... I've since shortened the crossbars so the foxwing sits closer to the roof.

You can shave the legs down from a Defender and it all works well. Here is mine with 2 yaks side by side. I also have a full length Rhino basket that goes on.
