    SLS Diagnosis

    Hi Guys,
    I have searched... honest

The rear of the D2 sunk almost to bumpstops on a trip yesterday - has been absolutely fine up till now with no signs of problems. Compressor had been running normally (I think) until recently but now only runs if I jumper the relay.

I am assuming that even though it runs, something is stuffed as when I connect compressor outlet direct to one of the airbags nothing happens (SLS fuse removed and relay jumpered). However, if I connect airbag to a different air source the airbag inflates and back of car lifts.

Previous owner fitted new conti airbags last year so I don't think failing bags are the root cause. Compressor also looks pretty new on the outside as barcode sticker etc is pristine.

Any ideas welcome as stuck at my sister's place in Bungendore until I can get re-inflated.

    Cheers, Charlie

two push in T connectors a foot of air line and two schrader valves and you're away,,
and it will test your bags for leaks when left overnight

Obvious your compressor is stuffed. It will still run just not pump air.It will run without pumping until the inbuilt thermal overload turns it off.As pedro said make up a temporary fix.Below is were i have got a pump from in the past, however check locally as the dollar has changed. Or if you are handy with tool the system can be modified to fit almost any tyre type compressor.

Pedro & Lewy - Thanks for the advice.

Once I find somewhere to obtain schrader valves & fittings I'll inflate and test that part of system.

Will worry about a replacement pump etc after I get back to home base.

    Cheers, Charlie

    Cheers Lewy,
Ordered some overnight from Les Richmond as I am without transport and I know they will fit... should have made up an SLS spares kit but have had lots of other issues to deal with on the car and was sucked in by the flawless operation of SLS until now

Hi, making a backup is a good move anyway but from your first post i understood that you bridged the relay and nothing happened with the bags which is normal cos the air supply valves are closed, if you connected a bag directly to the compresor output as you said but you didnt unplug the exhaust valve this can be irrelevant as well cos it can be a management missbehaviour which keeps the exhaust valve opened then the compressor supply goes out there, the good move is to unplug everything(electrical connectors) in the compressor housing and improvise a wiring as to give feed to the compressor and the two air supply valves at the same time and if then you hear the compressor running but no bag activity you can blame the pump 100%, if it inflates you can leave everything unplugged and drive it for days if no leak is present.... though if it inflates this way there's some other trouble which needs investigation... a scheme for this "manual" inflation and one for a backup attached

Sierra, Thankyou - this information is really helpful and should let me get a better understanding of what is actually happening.

OK... followed Sierrafery's instructions and ran the compressor & valves manually for a minute or so and nothing happened.

Then squirted WD40 down the compressor intake and the back of the car pumped up in around 30 seconds.

Sounding like the compressor to me unless a couple of minutes is what they normally take to pump up from fully de-pressurized.

Anyway, at least we have some transport again

good to hear you're on the road again,,

    so the compressor works--
and it even pumps air with a bit of oil to seal up the bore,,
which sort of seems like the piston wont pump air--

did it lower on the trip home?
    looking for leaking bags here--
thats the usual reason a compressor fails
( apart from being under water)
