    Torque converter when cold.

Just wondering why the converter wont lock up untill everything is up to temp?
    (TD5)

It's pretty annoying - is there a way to alter this?

Had a d1 V8 auto and can't remember it doing it.

    Cheers

Heres one for ya, If I leave my house in the morning on my way to work, I oull it out of the shed @ about 20degreees coolant temp, I drive down the road, stop at the lights, round the corner, round a roundabout, and onto the expressway on ramp, probably 2 kays total distance, I get lockup at about 70 degrees coolant temp and anything over 80 kays, as I merge onto the express way.

if I leave work in the morning after nightshift, coolant temp at similar temp, MAYBE slightly less, I can drive down the driveway at work which is about 2 kays in itself (@ 80kph or thereabouts) drop onto the highway, and do almost another 3 kays (estimate) @ 100Kph BEFORE I get lockup, at this point the engine is about 87 degrees coolant temp...

its weird, and annoying, butI do understand that the ECM looks at Trans Temp, Engine Temp, Load and Ground Speed before selecting lockup in top gear.

Just lock it in 3rd if you want lock up, Not weird, its to protect the auto clutches as cold oil will not work properly. For faster warm up if you really want it on stat up lock in 2nd, brake on, and run at about 1800 rpm for about a min. then drive off normally. This heats the oil faster, but be warned it will have an effect on oil and clutch life to some degree.
The instruction manual for my Cat back hoe states to operate down stick for 1min in temperatures below 32F before commencing work Same thing, warm the oil so it flows and protects what it is supposed to.
