    TD5 Questions

    Hi,
I'm new to this site but not a new LR owner. I had a TDi for many years and only sold it when I went overseas for a few years. I wish I'd kept it because good ones are hard to find now.

So, I'm looking at a few TD5 auto diesels in the cheap and cheerful range and hope this brain pool can help.

Question 1: I've been told that it's fairly common to have gearbox failure, usually after the 250k kms mark and that it's about a $5k repair job. Would this be right?

Question 2: One I've found only goes up 500 RPM when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd at 50km/h. Then it's fine again. Is this a common sympton and an easy fix, or a sign of a big issue? The vehicle has done over 350k kms but appears to have been well looked after.

    Question 3: Will a bullbar from a 1999 TD5 fit a 2003 TD5?

Any comments, advice etc much appreciated.

usually give up between 200 250 k , 5-6 k to replace at trans shop

no this is not normal afaik
    Question 3: Will a bullbar from a 1999 TD5 fit a 2003 TD5
it would but would have a large gap between the bar and the lights/grille

if you look in the d2 forums you will find a comprehensive list of what to look for if it has a good service history it may well be ok but I would be asking if it has had a trans , head replacement etc etc

Yes it should be going DOWN by 500RPM if it is changing from 2nd to 3rd.

Can I suggest that if you are going up a hill at the time it may have been in locked 3rd which activates at 60Kmh and then it changed back to 3rd unlocked at 50Kmh. If so that is normal behaviour, but I must admit it took me over 2 years to work out what the smart arse transmission was doing.

Not sure on longevity, I have a manual, but

    Ashcroft Transmissions

725 Pounds, about $1600 plus shipping.

I know this as I am looking at a rebuilt Manual, R380 for mine.
D2a Td5 Manual, Chawton White. aka "Daisy"
    Build date 11th Oct 2003
Freelander 2 2011, manual, the daughter calls it Perri
Before I had a Land Rover I did not have any torque wrenches. Now I have three.

    Gday mate

What symptoms does it show? I've also got a manual box....done 302,000 and seems pretty sweet.

Philip, I was probably a bit ambiguous because from 2nd it only goes up 500RPM then changes to 3rd. But it sounds like there are characteristics of these transmissions I may be misinterpretting.

If I was fitting a new trans I would be replacing the cooler (possible contaminants stuck inside from previous failure ) and at least flushing the lines , but as we know these lines can sometimes let go with disastrous results so why pay out so much for the main item and then destroy it by not ensuring the other components are up to the job :banghead:
Ps you would probably have no warranty without doing this !!!!!!!! and don't forget return shipping etc as these are usually a change over
