Might be worth putting a claim in with Aussie Post. About a year ago I had a parcel arrive from Alaska damaged and taped up with some contents missing. It wasn't insured, but I put a claim in anyway and Aust Post reimbursed part of the missing item's cost. It's capped reasonably low as I recall ($100?) For uninsured parcels, but it still covered the majority of it in my case and the sender sent a replacement gratis in the meantime. So I spent that and a lot more with them as a thank you.
Having said that, it sounds like in your case it was improperly packed by the sender and therfore the onus is on them in the first instance to rectify the issue.
Doesn't hurt to ask
Don't just assume you've done your dosh until you let them know and see what they'll do about it.
Good luck!
