D2 overheating TOTALLY FINALLY solved v8 and Tdi

    Greetings
    PROBLEM
Four years I have struggled with my V8 overheating. I bought an OBDC and plugged it in and used my iPhone to monitor the temperature. I did this because the gauge is completely useless. It used to run at 105 to 110 degrees. After a new radiator it got hotter. On the highway, on hills at night in the cool it was always hot hot hot. I replaced the viscous fan. It had extra fans, everything was checked and changed out to no avail. I also bought an engine watchdog and found that it was running about 3 degrees below that showing from the OBDC (which comes from the actual temp sender)
    SOLUTION
Murray, at Jagrover Spares in Brisbane got sick of all of the engines overheating and blowing and liners slipping and head gaskets popping and radiators popping and I even saw one of the thermostats with a huge split in its side due to excessive temperature and pressure. He has totally redesigned the coolant flow and he now uses an in-line thermostat running at 82 degrees, with a slight drillhole modification. He has done away with the stupid BMW heart valve monstrosity, and my D2V8 now sits on 84 to 89 degrees. I cannot thank him enough and urge all D2 and P38 owners to contact him. (07) 3857 5763. He has actually worked it out and my vehicle is fantastically cool just like the old ranges and disco ones of yesterday. This works for p38s too. He has the hoses and inline thermostat that fit and work. Hallelujah.

Nice work, I too have fitted a triden hi-flow thermostat to my GEMS powered P38 and the original thermostat housing has been replaced with an aluminium unit.

    System is much better !

Hi Geoff, great to hear your woes have been sorted.
It is unusual that it would run that hot, though I think we'd agree the cooling system on the classic and d1s were better.

Would you be able to go into more detail on what's been changed?

Note that the excessive pressure is usually due to faulty aftermarket expansion tank caps, genuine only is a good idea !

The gauge works just fine and does what it was designed to do..

perhaps you need to look at actually diagnosing a fault before you throw thousands of dollars down range changing stuff that doesnt need to be changed at random hoping to find and cure the problem?

(also the TDI already has an inline thermostat but never appeared in a D2, you might mean the TD5)

Theres also preventative maintenance and operator checks that should be done that give early evidence of small problems that when delt with early are cheap to rectify and dont cause major dramas.

    Thanks

Thanks Dave, appreciate your sentiments. Agreed. The fix for me cost $233. No random work this end with Full SMEAC and two FRAGOs saw minimal outlay. Big shoutout to Aulro esp ozScotty and Pedro whose great support and positive contributions saw us on the chart for the whole voyage. Previous owner blew the engine using the OEM gauge so not for me. Hoses, housing and thermostat all changed out for $233. Murray at Jagrover 07 3857 5763 took the time to diagnose, get help, understand and fix the problem. As Scotty says, there looks to be a problem with the BMW system. It is not working properly as evidenced from the witness staining in the used housings. The lower chamber ie radiator bound fluid is not stained suggesting the water is bypassing the radiator at least in part. Not one but many are like this. With so many early catastrophic failures from poor cooling something is wrong with the D2s and P38s. No wonder you stuck with the best- a series and a D1!! Well done. But I have a D2 and now it works. Brilliantly. Like it did before the Germans tried to tweak perfection. The more I think about it the more I realise a Buick engine needs a Buick solution. I agree about maintenance and ran a SWB 2A, a 74 RRC and an 89 vogue hiline in Port Moresby and took my 74RRC to Hagen and Porgera. (2,300m, 5.5S) Solo Unscheduled Stops (sus) there can be very interesting so I am probably a bit more vigilant than most owners. Had great remote support from Dwayne at MR and rebuilt an engine by mail order!! So thanks again for your thoughts and will soon be sand plowing with trailer down the main beach at Straddie alert for things other than a too hot engine. Thanks for your help and have a great Christmas and New Year. Cheers for now.

I am very interested as well. Haven't had any overheating issues yet but don't want any either.
