The heads when serviced where not warped hence no overheating. Pretty sure the guy who I took them to thought I was wasting my money. I'm sure he appreciated the easy money though.

Also, the highly accurate temperature gauge has stayed midway all it's life, again don't believe it has over heated. No other issue to imply it has overheated. Steam etc.

Maybe third time is a charm.

(why do I have log in to submit this post when already logged in, almost as bad as this head gasket job)

Yep I haven't heard of blocks going out but I checked mine anyway. Did the guy who looked at the heads do both a hardness test and chemical crack detection? I reckon they might be fine but I'm far from convinced about stretch bolts after motors have been apart...BUT it doesnt seem likely that stretch bolts would cause a problem so soon after going back together unless the heads are warped or cracked etc.

    Cheers

The good thing about Cometic MLS head gaskets is that they are made in 94mm bore size, unlike the stock head gaskets which normally sit on the block at 96mm. These should in theory give a much better grip on the top of a stepped liner. I put some in a 4.6 relinered block that blew a few stock head gaskets due to the liner shifting in a cracked block. 6 months later and it's still going.

Pretty sure I will be sending the Disco to the wreckers.

15 years old, most likely a crack in the liner, lower block somewhere. Although I have enjoyed working on it is turning out to be a bit time consuming and uneconomical to maintain.

With water in cylinder 4 its hard to think what else it could be.

I don't think I could be bothered with a wreckers lower block only to have the same problems with liners etc.

    I'll keep you posted.

Yep know how you feel mate. I elected to go 4.6 high comp stocker with 40,000k on it from Hong Kong from a P38a. Very economical option. Cheers

    Clearly more compassionate than me.

The more I think about it the more I'm inclined to let it go and move on.

It's been good but there's more to life than the Disco and tinkering away on it.

The worst part about the whole situation is I don't really need the car but it's handy to have as a spare.

Just pondering to buy a brand new one. Just not a Land Rover. Will be closing this chapter.

Sold it to a guy chasing parts

$1500, Sold too cheaply. Did have an offer for $2k.

Sold within 7 hours so heaps of interest for the car.

Mate he got a bargain. I had a good 4.0 sitting around for a while. It would have been a great buy for a guy with a good spare engine and some mechanical skills.

    Cheers

I'm sure he did get a bargain so I'm happy for him.

I'm not sure 'a good spare engine' exist with regards to this model.

Pretty significant flaw in the motor and all too common. Mine was well maintained and low kms so ripped off.

If I had more spare time to work on it I may have reconsidered the sale but maintenance cost are only going one way.

I drove a Audi Q7 some time back it was punching out 6litres/100km . It cost ~$50 to fill after travelling from Sydney to Canberrra, some site seeing and back to Sydney. The disco is anywhere between 14 - 19l/100 km and a $100 to fill.

Time to move on for me. It has been good but that's history now.
