    Snorkle in the rain query

I'm guessing that when it rain, you turn the snorkle to face to the rear? Otherwise the snorkel will fill up with water.

    Mine always faces forwards.

I don't think that there is going to be too much water ingress ...and even if there were.. there is a drain valve in the base of the air box
Seems to me that any direction other than forward would mean that the airflow into the airbox would be being sucked in by the turbo (meaning more stress on the turbo) instead of being forced into the safari pipe by the extra air pressure of the moving vehicle.

Isn't that meant to be sealed up? Death by Sikaflex?

6 weeks or so ago, I drove from Wagga to the north end of Sydney in pouring rain, pulling a two tonne trailer loaded with furniture. I have a Donaldson cyclone on top of my snorkel. Next day I noticed a dribble from the cap of the cyclone when parked on a slope. Investigation revealed the dust cup 3/4 full of water, so yes water can get sucked in.

Snorkel heads have drain vents all around the head.
The idea is that most of the water hits the back wall of the head then drains out the vents around the bottom. the pipe of the snorkel should also sit up proud in the head.

You have to keep the vents clean of bees, wasps etc for them to work.

If you have a Chinese copy snorkel they did not really understand this idea and did not extend the vents upward past the flat bit where the clamp goes, so if you have one of these get a hacksaw and box cutter and extend the vents.

A bit of water still gets in , but the volume of air into the engine will evaporate it quickly.
I have never had enough water in to wet a filter in about 15 years of using snorkles.

AaaH, I thought the "expansion slots" are a bit too wide. So that is what they are there for. Smart.

    Thanks

I did that, but found in heavy rain the filter was getting wet enough to reduce engine performance. Found that water being sucked in was unable to drain after the air box cyclone had spun it out.

I have a Mantec snorkel which is designed to face rearwards.

If since unstuck my valve and haven't had the problem since.

Just replace the duck bill instead of sealing it up. Also the mantec snorkels can suck water off the guttering
